Yemi Alade: The most followed woman in Nigeria

The most followed woman in Nigeria

With over 30 million followers on Social Media, Yemi Alade is the most followed and popular woman in Nigeria

Note: This is a research article written based on gathered fact.

Social media is a yardstick for a lot of things, majority of which are success, global reach, and influence.

It has been noticed that overtime, those with high social media followers must have done well in their fields, and are followed massively because their fans love them so much, that they want to keep up with their lifestyle and success.

Currently, and for a period of over three years, Yemi Alade has been the most followed woman in Nigeria. Using the three major social media platforms, here are her stats:

Instagram: 14.7 million followers (estimated)

https://www.instagram.com/p/CTaINIxoWvg/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

Most celebrities with high social media following have their major following on Instagram because it is a multipurpose site. It has a wonderful interface that allows you to post beautiful pictures, and has a quite engaging comment section, though not as engaging as Twitter.

With Yemi Alade’s Instagram account, she mainly posts videos to showcase her work; which may be a new song, video or body of work. She uses it as her major promotion platform because of her wide reach on the platform.

Currently, Yemi Alade is the second most followed person on Instagram in Nigeria after Davido. It is therefore not surprising that she has quite a lot of engagement as she consistently posts videos not only of her work, but people dancing to her songs.

Facebook: 11.9 million

Yemi Alade

Like most celebrities, Alade’s Facebook account is majorly a replica of her Instagram account. It would seem that she automatically allows her Facebook account to instantly share what she posts on Instagram.

Twitter: 1 million

It is not surprising that her followers on this platform is low. Alade interacts even less with Twitter than other social media platforms because she probably finds it “stressful” and disturbing.

I mean, on Twitter, there is that person saying what he or she is not supposed to be saying, and then there are thousands of people backing them up.

In fact, she trended on Twitter in 2020 like only three times: when Patoranking posted a picture of her, when she released her “Deceive” music video and when she released pictures of her “engagement” with Patoranking

Meanwhile, despite what people say about Yemi Alade and her music, why does she have the most following as a woman in Nigeria?

1 Content

This woman knows how to create content and this is evident when in 2019, she became the first African Female to have over one million subscribers on YouTube (Now 1.8M).

She has a strong You tube presence and her You tube videos have been applauded for their creativity. Even on Instagram and other platforms, she showcases this content.

Meanwhile, this is not the only content she posts. She is a beautiful person and she posts beautiful pictures of herself on Instagram which hits as many likes as one could possibly have,

2 Simple Lifestyle

Yemi Alade has a simple lifestyle that resonates with a lot of people. She tends to focus on her work and avoids the dramatic.

If she is not working on new music, she is planning to go on tour, if she is not planning to go on tour, she is shooting music videos. She is a hardworking geek and I guess this motivates a lot of people to follow her.

3 Connections

Celebrities like Funke Akindele, Omotola Jalade, Simi, Dakore Egbuson, Nancy Isime, Tonto Dikeh, Broda Shaggi, Tacha, Siruti, to mention a few, are always seen commenting about their love for Yemi Alade, her work ethics and her music.

These connections draw the fans of her admirers to admire her too. She does knows how to connect with the right people, and this is serving her well!

4 Performance

She happens to be a great performer. In 2018, The Headies award slated a new category of award for “Best performer of the year”. She won the first category, the second and the third.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CS3xGMbKI54/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

Recently, alongside several Nigerian artists, she performed at the 2021 Yam Carnival Festival in London.

Also, with the releases of her last two albums: “Woman of Steel” and “Empress”, she might soon be nominated for a Grammy Award as the Recording Academy has been recognizing her in a few of their activities.

Yemi Alade might uncontestably hold up this position for a very long time, because it seems she is always working and serving content.

About a month ago, she released her Sophomore Extended Play titled “Queen don come”, a wonderful body of work by the way.

Yemi Alade Queen Don Come EP Review

Yemi Alade Queen Don Come EP Review

Following the success of the release of her fifth studio album “Empress” which had three singles chart on Top Triller Global and one of the music video trend #1 on You Tube, Afropop Queen Yemi Alade is out with her second Extended play (EP) “Queen Don Come” and we cannot wait to dig into it.

If anything, Yemi Alade has shown that she manages to stay on top with her consistency. If she is not shooting music videos, she is recording new songs or planning to go on tour. She serves so much music content that she has been dubbed “The Queen of Content” especially with the creativity of her music videos. With more than 1.4 million listeners on Spotify and 1.8 million subscribers on YouTube, she establishes her position as the Queen of music in Nigeria.

Let’s get into a track by track review of her latest EP “Queen Don Come”

Starting with the title of the EP, it is obvious Yemi Alade is always trying to say no one really beats her when it comes to music by female singers in Nigeria. Though, this may not be entirely true. And what she might mean is that everyone is a queen in their own space. Her first studio album is titled “King of Queens”, her second studio album “Mama Africa”. Her fourth studio album is titled “Woman of Steel” and her fifth, “Empress” and now, “Queen Don Come” her second EP.

Queen Don Come EP Review

Track 1“Ogogoro”

It is a good opener, at least, it has the sizzling tune that makes you get interested in the EP. Yemi explains how a guy intoxicates her like “Ogogoro” and leaves her wanting for more. It is a good song and would have been so much better if one more stanza had been added.

Track 2“Sweety”

“Sweety” has a more romantic tune in comparison to “Ogogoro”. It is a vibe on its own! The only thing that made the song short of perfection is the vocalizing. It is a common feature of most Yemi Alade songs and most times, it almost ruins the originality of the song. Nevertheless, “Sweety” ends as a nice smooth song.

Track 3“Ike”

“Ike” is a song about the love tussle between lovers. “Ike” means strength in Igbo language. Yemi opens with the catchphrase “I go catch you today”. She exclaims how he reaches out to other girls because he is handsome and rich.

Track 4
“Enjoyment”

One of the perfect songs on this EP. “Enjoyment” really puts you in an enjoyment mood. It achieves the goal of putting the listeners in a state of relaxation. The essence of a song is when it successfully achieves a goal or passes a message across successfully to the listeners. Enjoyment achieves this goal.

Also, the upbeat tempo does well for the song. Normally, I think Yemi Alade is more skilled in singing songs with Upbeat Tempo than with songs with a slow rhythm. Most of her hit songs “Johnny”, “Shekere”, “Bum Bum”, “Deceive” and “True Love” all have upbeat Tempos.

Read: Nigerian artists with highest listeners on spotify

“Enjoyment” also contains lyrics that are not just recycled over stanzas and hooks. No wonder it is the lead single. While the glib at the end do no good in adding to the song, the song is a nice song.

Track 5“Dada”

“Dada” is okay. The singer sings about how she would do anything for a guy named Dada. The song has a similar tune and pattern to her “Shake” song on “Woman of Steel” album. I honestly feel like “Dada” should not have made the “Queen Don Come” EP. The EP is better without it. But if anything, I have learnt that every song is dear to the singer and they have their reasons for releasing the song.

Read: Yemi Alade: ‘EMPRESS’ album review

Track 6“Ella”

“Ella” is literally the perfect song on this album. It gives “Queen Don Come” a different tone in comparison to other songs on the album.

“Ella” adjoins women and girls to be careful in relationships and not to invest themselves, their time and resources to relationships that would obviously fail. They should go into relationships because of themselves and the love they feel. Yemi says:

“It go be wuru wuru kind of love”.

To single mothers, she encourages them that the sun will shine in their lives and everything will fit into place consequently. Thumbs up to Yemi on this one.

Track 7“Fire”

“Fire” is a song of adulation to a guy about his body. It is different to other love songs on “Queen Don Come” and the hook is very good. It should have been a single and should not have come last. But then, it probably came last to make the listeners want to listen to the EP again.

In the song, the singer likes a guy more than he does her and she implores him to love her equally because his friends are already making jest of her.
“Fire” is not bad coming last, it leaves a good memory for “Queen Don Come” and makes the listeners want to listen to it again.

Summary

“Queen Don Come” is a good body of work and will most likely be open to more positive reviews and though it does not have the creative power and addictiveness of “Empress”- Yemi Alade’s last album, it still leaves listeners awed at Yemi’s talents as a musician and how she has been able to stay relevant to their ears.

Take away the glib and vocalizing, and “Queen Don Come” would have been a perfect body of work. But if anything, it is an “All Yemi-Alade” body of work as there is no featured artist on the Extended play and this does not make it less powerful. Yemi should be applauded for dishing out relevant contemporary songs

Yemi Alade releases “Rain” music video

Yemi Alade releases “Rain” music video

Yemi Alade releases the music video for rain and it is the most uplifting 2021 music video yet.

“Purely Legendary”

Off her 2020 Empress Album, The Queen of Afrobeats has released the music video for her African peace-themed song titled “Rain” where she featured South Africa’s Mzansi Youth Choir.

Songs like “Rain” are Perennial. In this new age of the Nigerian Music Industry, you rarely hear any singer singing about the Unity of Africans and hope for Africa as a continent with many dark shades and situations.

Meanwhile, throughout her ongoing career, Alade has always adopted a pro-black stance and has been acclaimed “Mama Africa” for the inclusiveness of all of Africa in her songs, the culture of Africa in her music videos and being the only Nigerian Artiste to tour virtually all the countries in Africa.

Read: Yemi Alade: ‘EMPRESS’ album review

Rain Music Video could not have come at a better time. It is so uplifting and I gaped at some scenes that depicted pure African culture and scenery. The feeling is like “I can’t believe this is Africa”

Directed by the proficient “Ovie Etseyatshe”, the Music Video will most likely be the last off her album- EMPRESS.

Angelique Kidjo and Yemi Alade release new song titled ‘Dignity’- A song of social and political consciousness

Angelique Kidjo and Yemi Alade release new song titled ‘Dignity’- A song of social and political consciousness

After the release of “Shekere” off Yemi Alade’s “Woman of steel” album, we knew both had done an excellent job in creating a wonderful cultural anthem. The Video is now at 18 million views and it was such an enthralling beautiful display of culture to watch.

Few days ago, Grammy award winner Angelique Kidjo and Yemi Alade announced on social media that fans should expect a project called ‘Dignity’. We didn’t know if it was a documentary, a joint album or a song. Yesterday, they announced that it was a song and it would be relased the following day (Today) with its accompanying music video.

We have listened to the song and seen the music video and here is our review.

The song

Angelique Kidjo opens with a powerful Beninise language and says ‘Dignity, I wanna hold on to you!”. Surprisingly, Yemi Alade enters quickly and says ” Where you dey yesterday when the gunmen shoot you down?”. She makes a reference to someone who engages in nefarious activities and asks where the person’s dignity is when the individual is caught.

It is an ageless song that questions the dignity of men and call for it. It embarks on a mission of social and political consciousness. It calls for dignity of individuals, people in high places, people in low places and people of authority, stating that dignity is a priceless virtue and whatever the alternative is, is not worth it. It is really an excellent song and it will do well.

Also, Yemi and Angelique have this song chemistry that makes collaborations between them so meaningful and impactful. I mean, Yemi hasn’t really had a collaboration with many female artists, in fact, none in Nigeria. But this, it is just mind blowing.

Flaw

The song has an upbeat tempo that almost implores the listener to dance. But I think this was probably done to make the song interesting and fascinating to the listeners while successfully passing its message. Also, the “catchphrase” in the song is okay but not perfect. We are struggling to see how “Respect is reciprocal” ultimately corresponds to the contenet of the song, still, it doesn’t feel like it doesn’t belong.

The Music Video

Breathtaking illustration of a train worker accepting a bribe which leads to a pregnant woman getting an eviction notice. It was socially-conscious plated as I expected and it was meaningful. You could tell the story being sung in the sung through the music video.

Using Brown Skin video concept was not bad for the scene where Yemi Alade was holding the baby- perhaps a reference to the life the baby should have.

Flaw

The choreography was okay, but should have been more feisty. I was expecting more dance moves from both singers, but they gave quite little of this. Also, there was no scene of Angelique and Yemi together. I mean, both of them are two of the best performers in Africa and there was no scene of their choreography together. It would have made the video better.

Aside these, I am proud of a song like ‘Dignity’. A song that has a meaningful and impactful message, an imploring message of integrity. Kudos to both artists on this work of art.

Yemi Alade: ‘EMPRESS’ album review

YEMI ALADE: EMPRESS ALBUM REVIEW

‘Empress’ is Yemi Alade’s best album yet. It is thorough. With “Empress”, Alade incorporates afrobeat into all parts of the world while featuring timeless music emedded wih creative sounds. It shows that Alade has evolved as an artist. She might also be going for a Grammy with this album.

On November 20, 2020, Nigerian Afropop singer- Yemi Alade released her fifth studio album titled ‘Empress’. If you have noticed, her album title is always synonymous with royalty; the royalty she expresses. Her debut studio album was ‘King of Queens’, followed by ‘Mama Africa’, then the third one focused on her music magic and the magic of the African continent, so she titled it ‘Black magic’. Her fourth studio album released in September 2019 was titled ‘Woman of steel’ and it made quite a mark for her.

But with ‘Empress’. It is different. let us get into the track by track review and tell you why it is.

1 True love

‘True love’ sets the mood for what to expect from ‘Empress’. The South-African influenced track is embedded with such lyrics that makes it impossible not to fall in love with the song. The only flaw with this song is that the chorus makes it long. Alade establishes how ‘True love’ cannot be found in romance alone, and I think this is what makes the song special. I remember going to the mall one day and the song was being played for little kids in an amusement park as they rode different toy vehicles. It is a song for everyone. She says, ‘True love get vibe, it doesn’t need a dime ooo’. She then goes on to say; ‘I can feel it in my baseline…’ The lyrical expressions grace imageries that makes the song go beyond audio. Kudos to Alade on the songwriting.

2. ‘Yoyoyo’

“Yoyoyo” descends into the story of how guys swindle ladies easily and get away with it. The song is reminiscent of Yemi’s inclination to have a story song in each of her album. In King of Queens, it was ‘Johnny’, and on ‘Woman of Steel’, it was ‘Yeba’. The flaw with this song is that it doesn’t really resonate with the new standard of the Nigerian music industry, but still, it is enjoyable.

3. ‘Mami water’

“Mami Water” shouldn’t have come as track number three, but still, it is a very good song that explores how men are easily swayed by women’s physical characteristics and fail to see whatever trap they might be leading them to. ‘Mami water’ herself is a reference to a beautiful water goddess that makes men’s jaws drop by her beauty. Alade sings; ‘Make you dey ready to waka, if she carry you enter water, oh you no go come back again’

4 ‘Lose my mind’

By the time this song rolls in, we are already in sync with the dancehall influence on this album. I think it is impossible to listen to any of the songs and not be tempted to dance. ‘Lose my mind’ is a beautiful song and the resonance between Alade and French singer- Vegedream, is a beauty. It is also incredible how the song has almost no flaws.

5. ‘Dancina’

It shouldn’t have come as track number 5, considering that ‘True Love’ and ‘Lose my mind’ have been the strongest tracks so far. Still, the Ghanaian influenced track exemplifies how Alade will never betray her fans who have come to adore her for a dance queen she is. ‘Dancina’ is an addictive dance song and think this covers whatever flaw it might have.

6 ‘Boyz’

“Boyz” sets a different tone from the rest of the tracks. Yemi explains the kind of men she desires. In fact, Boyz is not a bad song at all. No wonder it was a lead single. She says, ‘We only roll with the finest’. The song is actually lyric embedded if you listen to it well and it has a beautiful dance tempo to it too.

7. ‘I choose you’

It is a powerful collaboration with popular French singer/songwriter Dadju. Even though it contains common lyrics and love themes, it does this by setting the listeners in a dance mood more than a romance mood. The song is a vibe, as Dadju supplies sizzling French lyrics to it. If Alade had sang some parts in French rather than English alone, the sync would have been too beautiful.

8 ‘Control’

“Control” shows how different Alade is from a lot of Nigerian artists. The singer loves to experiment, and the way she does it on her songs simply makes her one of the best. She assertively declares how she controls her life, her environment and her kingdom. She adds strong French lyrics that makes the song versatile, whilst supporting it with Igbo and English. ‘Control’ is a good song. If the music video for this song is released, it should properly encapsulate Alade’s mood while recording the song. I think by now, she ought to notice that she should try to put something that best depicts royalty in her albums. One would have hoped that there would be a song titled ‘Woman of steel’ or ‘steel’ in her lyrics in the erstwhile album.

9 ‘Temptation’

It is perhaps, one of the best songs on this album. It should have been a single and it shows that Alade does better in collaboration with other artists on her song. Her flow with Patoranking is crazy, considering that Patoranking himself is the king of dancehall music. Temptation is a perfect song and it should have come earlier on the album.

10. ‘Ice’

“Ice” follows immediately and to be honest, it is a very good song. Although, it will most likely be ignored on the album and probably not have a music video.

Read also: Omah Lay: ‘What have we done’ EP review

11. ‘Deceive’

It came just too late on the album. It should have been a single too. Her synergy with Rudeboy is electric. Kudos to both of them on perfect delivery.

Computing Category

12 ‘Turn up’

It is not our favorite song on the album, but it is not a bad song. It would have been better if it wasn’t about Yemi’s attractiveness to a man, but how she ‘turns up’ with her friends to celebrate. Hopefully, the music video would do well to emphasize the song.

13. ‘Rain’

“Rain” is our favorite track on the album. It is just too beautiful. It is inspirational and healing. The gospel influence on it is also accentuated by her collaboration with the Mzansi South-Africa choir. It shows Alade’s inclination to add a Pan-African song in each of her albums. In ‘Mama Africa’, it was ‘Africa’. In ‘Woman of Steel’, it was ‘Shekere’. ‘Rain’ is heartwarming and really pushes us to pray for Africa. We can’t wait to see the music video.

14. ‘Weekend’

“Weekend” is a whole mood! It shows how malleable Alade has become. The song is a perfect R and B and perhaps the most perfect song on this album. Grammy award winning British singer – Estelle, delivers her verse properly while singing some Yoruba! It also shows how wrong people have been about Yemi Alade. A lot of people come for her because they claim her lyrics are sub-standard.

If you listened to this song, and in fact, a lot of songs on Empress Album, you would realize that this is so not true. In fact, she has stepped up her songwriting skill 100%.

15. ‘Double double’
Using electronic music, It sums up the album with Alade thanking God for everything she has accomplished so far.

Conclusion

‘Empress’ is Yemi Alade’s best album yet. ‘Woman of steel’ was good, but ‘Empress’ is better. It has more replay value than ‘Woman of steel’ and it is more addictive in comparison. It also shows that Alade has evolved as an artist. She might also be going for a Grammy with this album. It is just too thorough and the positive reviews she has had on this album is like no other.

Another wonderful thing about this album is the collaboration on it, and that explains again how unique Alade is. She doesn’t choose collaborations based on how popular they are with people. She chooses collaborations based on how they would better her songs. A lot of Nigerians might not have known Dadju, Vegedream or even Estelle before. But now, seeing how brilliant they have done on her song, we would watch out for them and even listen to some of their songs. She is incorporating Afrobeats into all parts of the world, and we love that!
