The song was written by Brown along with Nigerian singer Davido, and produced by Kiddominant.
Commercially, “Under the Influence” became a sleeper hit; going viral on TikTok three years after the song’s release, which led to it being released as a single on September 6, 2022. The song was also sent to US urban and rhythmic radio on September 20.
The song debuted at number 36 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on the issue dated September 24, 2022, three years after it was released.
On the Global 200, the song peaked at number 9, making it Brown’s first top ten on the chart.
With the official release of the song, Brown became the first R&B singer in history to have over fifty (an estimated one hundred) Hot 100 hits debut on the chart.
