Bad idea right? lyrics
{Intro}
Hey
{Verse 1}
Haven’t heard from you in a couple of months
But I’m out right now and I’m all fucked up
And you’re callin’
my phone and you’re all alone
And I’m sensing some undertone
And I’m right here with all my friends
But you’re sending me your new address
And I know we’re done, I know we’re through
But, God, when I look at you
{Refrain}
My brain goes, “Ah”
Can’t hear my thoughts
(I cannot hear my thoughts)
Like blah-blah-blah
(Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah)
Should probably not
I should probably, probably not
I should probably, probably not
{Pre-Chorus}
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
Fuck it, it’s fine
{Chorus}
Yes, I know that he’s my ex
But can’t two people reconnect?
I only see him as a friend
The biggest lie I ever said
Oh, yes, I know that he’s my ex
But can’t two people reconnect?
I only see him as a friend
I just tripped and fell into his bed
{Verse 2}
Now I’m gettin’ in the car,
wreckin’ all my plans
I know I should stop, but I can’t
And I told my friends I was asleep
But I never said where or in whose sheets
And I pull up to your place on the second floor
And you’re standing, smiling at the door
And I’m sure I’ve seen much hotter men
But I really can’t remember when
{Refrain}
My brain goes, “Ah”
Can’t hear my thoughts
(I cannot hear my thoughts)
Like blah-blah-blah
(Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah)
Should probably not
I should probably, probably not
I should probably, probably not
{Pre-Chorus}
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
Fuck it, it’s fine
{Chorus}
Yes, I know that he’s my ex
But can’t two people reconnect?
I only see him as a friend
The biggest lie I ever said
Oh, yes, I know that he’s my ex
But can’t two people reconnect?
I only see him as a friend
I just tripped and fell into his bed
{Bridge}
Oh, yes, I know that he’s my ex
Can’t two people reconnect?
The biggest lie I ever said
I just tripped and fell into his bed
My brain goes, “Ah”
Can’t hear my thoughts
The biggest lie I ever said
My brain goes, “Ah”
Can’t hear my thoughts
I just tripped and fell into his bed
{Outro}
Thoughts
Blah
Thoughts
Blah

In the song’s official music video, Olivia ignores this initial call (she has him as “LOSER NOT WORTH MENTIONING” in her contacts). Her initial instinct is that talking to him would be a bad idea, so she has to slowly convince herself that “it’s fine.” Here, bad idea right lyrics explains why he resorts to texting her a few lines later
Every time that Olivia’s girl friends have appeared in her music, they have served as an opposing force to the guy she is interested in. Olivia usually ignores their opinion and then comes to regret it.
Correlation with previous songs
In “drivers license”, Olivia disagrees with her friends’ assessment of the guy and refuses to get over him:
And all my friends are tired
Of hearing how much I miss you, but
I kinda feel sorry for them
‘Cause they’ll never know you the way that I do
In “favorite crime”, Olivia defends her boyfriend from her friends and then he breaks her heart:
And I defended you to all my friends
In “vampire”, several girls prophetically warn Olivia about her boyfriend, but she just calls them crazy:
And every girl I ever talked to told me you were bad, bad news
You called them crazy, God, I hate the way I called ‘em crazy too
Now, in bad idea right lyrics, Olivia’s friends represent her knowledge that seeing the guy is a “bad idea”, which is why she lies to them—she knows they would try to stop her. If history is any lesson, they will be proven right.
In this line, Rodrigo states that her statement she tells her friends about being asleep isn’t untruthful but rather just downplayed as to not make note that it’s not her bed that she’s sleeping in, but rather that of a former flame.
In “traitor”, she sings in the bridge “When she’s sleeping in the bed we made”
Olivia has now come back to this bed she once knew so well, but now she’s just looking for nothing more than a fling, rather than the commitment of her prior relationship with her ex.
Rodrigo takes a different approach with bad idea right lyrics, compared to her other songs in the sense that she no longer feel as tied to this man as she did on “SOUR”. Rodrigo knows that she’s gone out with better looking guys before, but when she sees this one in particular, her memory of all the other ones suddenly fade away—leading to the refrain “Can’t hear my thoughts / Like blah-blah-blah”.
