Synopsis
Stephanie Conway, a 14-year-old Australian immigrant, decides she wants to be one of “the populars” after a disastrous birthday party with her pals Seth and Martha at the local “cool” hangout, Rock N Bowl, in 1999.
She spends the following several years getting a makeover, becoming the captain of the cheer squad, dating popular lad Blaine, and eventually becoming one of the most popular girls by senior year.
Stephanie aspires to win prom queen in 2002 in the hopes of following in the footsteps of Deanna Russo, a high school alumnus who married after graduation and now lives in a lavish mansion.
She continues to live with her widowed father and maintains friendships with Martha and Seth, who has a secret infatuation on her.
Stephanie and Blaine’s ex-girlfriend Tiffany have regular spats over prom preparations, as Tiffany feels intimidated by Stephanie’s chances of becoming prom queen.
Tiffany persuades her pals to wreck Stephanie’s landing at a cheer performance, badly wounding her and sending her into a coma.
Stephanie awakens from her coma twenty years later, in the year 2022. Her father and Martha, now Harding High’s principal and cheerleading coach, drive her home.
Stephanie notices the now-married Tiffany and Blaine living in Deanna Russo’s old house as they drive by.
Stephanie returns to high school to finish her senior year with the hesitant backing of her father and Martha, where she finds that Seth is now the librarian and that the prom king and queen roles have been eliminated due to student complaints.
Tiffany and Blaine’s daughter Bri is also the most popular kid at school and has a sizable social media following. The cheerleaders are no longer the most popular students, and they are forced to perform monotonous, sterile routines that do not include any dancing.
Stephanie uses social media to reclaim her old fame, and she ultimately succeeds after a risquĂ© cheer performance she choreographs without Martha’s consent goes viral at a pep rally.
The next day, she’s confronted by Martha, who claims that when Stephanie became popular in high school, she and Seth felt abandoned.
Stephanie and Seth go to see Deep Impact together, and after goading Tiffany into being thrown out of the movie for being disruptive, they become closer.
Following that, they go to the Rock N Bowl for cocktails, where Stephanie confesses that she is desperate to be voted prom queen in order to honor her late mother.
Tiffany uses Bri’s clout at school to get the prom king and queen contest revived, and she throws a prom afterparty at her house for everyone except Stephanie.
Stephanie resolves to throw her own afterparty at Martha’s lake property, without the help of her friends.
Seth decides to go to prom with Stephanie, but is upset when he watches Blaine try to kiss her, not realizing that Blaine was inebriated and trying to push himself on her.
Bri’s boyfriend Lance is crowned prom king, and despite Tiffany’s rigging of the vote to ensure Bri’s victory, Bri pulls out and Stephanie is crowned prom queen. The school rallies around Stephanie as she and Lance enjoy the prom king and queen dance.
Bri convinces everyone to come to Stephanie’s afterparty, which is a success until Tiffany convinces the cops to shut it down. Stephanie is confronted furiously by Martha for utilizing her lake cottage without permission.
Stephanie realizes her rideshare driver is a middle-aged Deanna Russo on the way home from the party.
Deanna explains that her spouse divorced her before she was 30 after opting to leave her for a 21-year-old lady. She was never able to make a life for herself because she didn’t have a college diploma, and she now works many part-time jobs while trying to pay for community college.
Deanna informs Stephanie that being prom queen did not provide her with a flawless life or solve all of her difficulties.
Bri returns home, enraged that Tiffany had called the cops on Stephanie’s party, and she points out that Tiffany had not even asked whether she was okay or if she had been arrested.
Bri insists on apologizing to Stephanie after pointing out that her father and mother are unhappy together. Stephanie accepts Tiffany’s apologies and encourages her to put her daughter first rather than her appearance.
Stephanie dismantles her popularity board and considers skipping the graduation ceremony, but her father persuades her otherwise.
She apologized to her fans and friends on social media and promised to be her authentic self from now on. Stephanie’s friends and family covertly plan the cheer routine from her senior year for her graduation.
She reconciles with Martha, kisses Seth for the first time, and invites Tiffany to join them on stage, where she finally gets to perform the move she never got to execute twenty years before.
