Asa has released her fifth studio album and it is the talk of music space.
We all know Asa is a leading legend now. Even though she doesnât release new music all the time and spends time touring or doing in-house concerts, she is credited for most of the hits that graced the Nigerian music industry some few years back.
Songs like âJailerâ, âEye Adabaâ and âEyoâ were praised for the songwriting, sound engineering and dynamic sounds Asa employed in them.
Her debut studio album âAsaâ– which was eponymous, saw her topping chats in France, Belgium, the United States, Nigeria and Germany. Her consequent studio albums; âBeautiful imperfectionâ (2010) and âBed of Stoneâ (2014) followed suit and fully established her as a genius in making music.

Although her last studio album âLucidâ (2019) did not have the critical acclaim her erstwhile albums had, it still garnered attention in Nigeria and topped some major streaming platforms.
Asa V album review
1) Mayana
On “Mayana“, the title of the song appears funny, but apparently, itâs what she wants to be for the guy, she says:
âYou will be my foreverâŠIâll be your Mayanaâ
âWhat does Asaâs âMayanaâ mean?
Historically, âMayanaâ is of Hebrew origin and means âWell spring of lifeâ. By saying âIâll be your Mayanaâ, Asa may mean âIâll be your well spring of lifeâ. Although there are several views of what âMayanaâ means.
Most streamed Nigerian Artists on Apple Music 2022
Some claim itâs of South African origin, meaning âLucky youâ, another says itâs of African origin meaning âNice of youâ while others say it refers to the âfifth month- Mayâ.
The last meaning associated with âMayanaâ is that it means you have âpsychic powersâ.
However, of these many definitions, âWell spring of lifeâ appears to be the closest and most reasonable thing that approximates to what Asa means in her song âMayanaâ
The hook is amazing! Asa goesâŠ
âNothing but our love,
Nothing but our love,
Nothing but the smile on our face cos we know sayâŠâ
Asa also successfully establishes the image of hanging out and enjoying life with her lover in an island. âFish and Bananaâ is probably her âchillingâ snack as she says she wants plenty âFish and Bananaâ. It might even be her loverâs best food/snack.
Hot: Skiibii âBaddest boyâ ft Davido: What does the song need? {Review}
âMayanaâ is sweet enough and this sweetness is even made sustained because the song has enough lyrics that are repeated enough to stick with the listener. It also made sense that the song ended short. It makes the listener want to listen to it repeatedly.
Kudos to Asa on this song.
âMayanaâ is a good love song because it has some authenticity and dynamism of Asaâs songwriting. It doesnât sound at all like the kind of common romantic song you hear blasting in the speakers.
It sounds like music written and performed by a veteran. It is devoid of needless lyrics and the sound just pampers the music so much that it gives the song a danceable tune but still makes it retain its romantic tune.
2) Ocean
Ocean is a single off V’s album, and it is not a disappointment! It is just too fluid and relaxing. The amazing thing is how Asa can write romantic songs in a very dynamic way.
Ocean is so soothing. And even though it is not a spectacular song, it has its uniqueness.
And its uniqueness is in its beats and the way Asa personalizes the song. It sounds so personal that it connects with you and to you when you are listening to it.
3) IDG ft Wizkid
https://youtu.be/RKiEIHp_Kt8
On IDG, Asa and Wizkid deliver a music, that we mostly guessed would not be romantic. But then, itbwould not have been bad if this song was a romantic song, it would have increased its replay value.
Honestly, IDG {I don’t Go} is a good with with appropriate lyrics and an amazing song theme, but if Asa’s intention for this song is that it reaches a milestone, she might not be disappointed, but IDG might not perform to such global acclaim because of the song theme.
Even if it was “Mayana” that she featured Wizkid on, it would have been better, because IDG does not sound like it needs a collaboration. It sounds like Asa can sing the song alone {especially with its song theme}.
Asa’s IDG means a lot to afrobeats because it is something we have all expected for a long time- A Wizkind and Asa collaboration.
But the fact settles that it is not a very unique song, and is in fact not one of Asa’s best song.
It offers a unique trajectory on life and how Asa lives her life of peace, art and tranquility. On this, she gets a huge thumbs up.
However, the argument remains that this song is relatable enough to be a hit song. Wizkid ultimately nailed his verse on IDG, and this may be enough for the song to be a hit.
4) Nike
Nike is a one in a kind song that showers so much sizzling lyrics on an adulation on a guy that Asa admires so much.
Although it’s a heartbreaking journey, Asa exclaims taht she has given her heart so ,ugh ro the guy that she can’t love anyone else.
Nike is a sweet song. But it shouldn’t have had a slow tune. It sounded like it was about to start with a little dancehall, but then dwindles into a slow beat. A faster beat would have made this song more interesting or catchy.
5) Show me off
Show me off has such unique beats that makes it a pleasant listen. It sounds like music you actually want to listen to when you are in a romantic mood.
This is because of the amount of sincerity in Asa’s tone that it can’t pass up for not being real. Asa did a madness on this beat as usual!
6) Morning man
Morning Man is about Asa’s wishes that she gives unlimited attention to a man, and that he values the attention so greatly that he can’t do without her. Hence, he will become her “Morning man”
Although Morning man does not carry the amount of effort the other songs carry, it is a commendable effort, but it is definitely not the best song on Asa’s V album.
7) Good Times Asa ft The Cavemen
The Cavemen are here! Good Times has some good times vibe, but this song sounds too simple, and the lyrics sound lazy too.
Asa enters with more substantial lyrics and being more intentional with the song theme. Which makes us think that she should have opened good times, and not the Cavamen, she establishes and saves Good Times.
8) Believer
If you don’t listen intently, you may not understand the theme of “Believer“. But Asa passes on a good message about faith in people.
She establishes that she is a “Believer” who believes in people and signals that others should believe in others too and not make unfounded assumptions.
Of course, Nigerians might not appreciate this song because Nigeria does not have an appreciation culture for platonic songs.

9) All I ever wanted ft Amaarae
All I ever wanted starts with some really cool Asa vibes and it’s simply mindblowimg! It is just simply amazing. Asa goes all in on “All I ever wanted” and it is simply one of the best songs off her V album.
All I ever wanted is about a girl reminding her lover of how close they used to be; how they used to love themselves so much despite everything.
She tries to gets very reminiscent with her lover, with the hope of them rekindling their love and getting her All she ever wanted.
Amaarae complements Asa’s verse so well. You could even mistake Asa for Amaarae if you can’t easily decipher between both artists. Their voices sound so identical and it gives All I ever wanted a blend.
This song is near perfection! The lyrics, the sound, the good girl gone bad vibes, the girl power vibes?
What Ozumba Mbadiwe means {Reekado Banksâ Song}
All I ever wanted is the best “getting over” someone song, because to some extent, Asa and Amaarae are singing about a guy they want to get over. They go all in on All I ever wanted.
Also, this song may relate well to ladies because All I ever wanted is an empowering song that makes you feel confident about what you want ,and also that you should never settle for less for any reason.
You should go after whatever you want no matter how you feel about the relationship because you realize that at the end of the day, what matters is your choice.
All I ever wanted is a big jam. Amaarae and Asa delivered ultimately. Big up to them both!
10) Love me or give me red wine
https://youtu.be/SH6fVhV2WdY
Love me or give me red wine, is the standard Asa’s song. To some extent, one would dare say Asa explores dark lyricism, because even the way she sings heartbreak songs are so powerful.
She spices Love me or give me red wine that it makes the song sound so interesting. It is a good album closer for V.
Asa’s V album is emotionally empowering because it offers love songs with such sincere and passionate delivery that makes you relate to the songs like never before. Asa takes us on a storytelling journey of love with V. And yes, V surpasses Lucid- her erstwhile album.
