Rave and Roses Ultra Becomes First Debut African Album to Earn RIAA Gold Certification
The RIAA Gold certification is a prestigious award that recognizes the success and popularity of a musical work in the United States. The RIAA Gold & Platinum Program was launched in 1958 to honor artists and track sound recording sales. The program has since expanded to include digital downloads and streams, as well as Latin music awards.Â
Nigerian singer and songwriter Rema has made history by becoming the first African artist to have his debut album certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). His debut studio album, Rave and Roses Ultra, released on April 28, 2023, achieved this feat after selling over 500,000 units in the United States.
Rave and Roses Ultra is a 22-track album that showcases Rema’s unique blend of Afro-fusion, Afrorave, and pop music. The album features collaborations with international stars such as 6lack, Chris Brown, AJ Tracey, and Yseult. Some of the hit singles from the album include “Charm” “Calm Down”, “FYN“, and “Calm Down (Remix)” with Selena Gomez.
Rema expressed his gratitude and excitement on his social media platforms, thanking his fans, his label Jonzing World/Mavin Records, and his team for their support. He also dedicated the achievement to his late father and brother, who inspired him to pursue his musical dreams.

Divine Ikubor (born 1 May 2000), popularly known by his stage name Rema is a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter and stage perfomer. He rose to stardom with the release of the song âIron Manâ. In 2019, he signed a record deal with Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records.
In 2018, Rema, posted a viral freestyle on Instagram to DâPrinceâs track âGucci Gangâ.
The post caught the attention of DâPrince who flew him to Lagos to offer a record deal to the young talent.
Rema signed a record deal with DâPrinceâs Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records owned by record producer Don Jazzy, in 2019.
He went on to release his self-titled debut EP âRemaâ in 2019, which peaked at number 1 on Apple Music Nigeria.
On 21 May 2019, Jonzing World, and Mavinâs released the music video of âDumebiâ, a major breakout song from his self-titled EP, featuring a cameo appearance from Diana Eneje. The video was directed by Ademola Falomo.
In May 2021, Rema announced he will be calling his sound âAfroraveâ, a subgenre of Afrobeats with influences of Arabian and Indian music which has led to him having one of the strongest fanbase in the country known as Ravers.
In September 2021 Rema was unveiled as a brand ambassador for the popular soft drink Pepsi alongside his label mate Ayra Starr
After Rema signed a record deal with Jonzing World, in 2019, he released his debut EP Rema. After two more EPs, he released his debut album Rave & Roses on 25 March 2022.
The album includes 16 tracks and features from 6lack, Chris Brown, AJ Tracey, and Yseult.
The album charted 10 songs on the US Billboard Afrobeats Chart following its debut week.
His single âCalm Downâ, including a sample from fellow Nigerian artist Crayonâs track âSo Fineâ,then began charting five months after its official release.
The next august 26th of 2022, the singer released a remix of his song ââCalm down with the singer Selena Gomez.
