Who We Think Will Win:
Here are the strongest contenders in each category, the reasons we think they have the chances of winning (or not) and their percentage chance of winning
Best African Music Performance
(Nominees)
Sensational – Chris Brown ft Davido and Lojay
Chance of winning: 65%
Sensational is as amazing as any other song in this category. Anytime Davido and Chris Brown come together to make music, a hit is sure to be made. Add a sprinkle of Lojay in there and what you have is magic
Factors that favour the song: Impact, popularity
Factos that don’t: Sensational is an Afrobeat song made by an international artist. The song is as deserving but this could potentially take it out of the race.
MMS- Asake ft Wizkid
Chance of winning: 70%
MMS is an impressive listen. The beats are standout. The lyrics are quite simple and adduce the artists’ blessings and wealth to God. It’s that song you turn on when you need to feel grateful
Factors that favour the song: The artists. Asake and Wizkid are heavyweights. The African themed beats also make the song a good choice for a nomination
Factors that don’t: MMS is a good song, but it’s not entirely new material or sound in comparison to the other songs in this category.
Tomorrow – Yemi Alade
Chance of winning: 75%
Yemi Alade’s first Grammy nomination, which is also a Solo one, is indeed impressive, but she’s facing strong contenders in this category which means she has as much chance of losing the award as she has of winning it.
Factors that favour the song: Tomorrow is the perfect African music Grammy material, it’s inspirational, and the performance is impressive too.
Factors that don’t: This is one of the strongest Grammy categories for African music, and the contenders this year have strong music quality as well.
Higher – Burna Boy
Chance of winning: 75%
Higher has the same inspirational vibe as Yemi Alade’s Tomorrow, and to an extent, Asake and Wizkid’s MMS. It’s definitely a strong contender. No surprise here, Burna Boy is no newcomer to the Grammys.
Factors that favor the song: The inspirational vibe. It’s the perfect Grammy material for African music
Factors that don’t: Higher is an impressive record but it doesn’t stand tall to most of Burna Boy’s records that were Grammy nominated and did not win.
Love Me Jeje – Tems
Chance of winning: 85%
Love me Jeje has the highest chance of winning this category. Love Me Jeje samples the 1997 Nigerian song of the same name by Seyi Sodimu featuring Shaffy Bello. The song is a re-imagination of a classic, that ends up being a hit song, and the most streamed Nigerian song on Spotify in 2024. The song is holding no prisoners
Factors that favor the song: Impact. Re-imagined classic
Factors that don’t: None
Best Global Music Album
Tems vs Rema
This looks like a close race
Tems had a standout debut, if not the best for any Nigerian artist ever. Born in the Wild is a spectacular album, and it seems to be taking it all in this category.
Rema’s album, on the other hand, is daring, experimental and fresh. The album has as much chance of winning as Tems’ album does. If the Recording Academy wants to go with something familiar, but still incredible, Tems’ album would win this category. However, if they turn to something more daring, Rema is taking the award home.
It’s almost difficult to decide on this category. But here’s how we see it:
- Tems- 85% chance of winning
- Rema- 80% chance of winning
