The Song Concept

First, the Concept of “My friend” is simply amazing. For Bella Shmurda to sit down, write and record a song as this, then he must have deemed it important enough.

Although it could be said that “My friend” was borne out of a personal experience, this does not take away Bella Shmurda’s evolution as an artist.

In the music industry now, song releases are as predictable as their titles, it’s easy to listen to an album filled with only love songs that don’t sound different from one another.

There are only few songs in comparison that actually talks about something different, and Bella Shmurda’s “My friend”, is one of them.

The realism of “My friend” makes it a pleasant listen. It is no doubt that Bella Shmurda is becoming a big artiste.

However, with fame comes certain difficulties; and such difficulties, are what makes Bella Shmurda’s Friend thinks he is getting proud and wants nothing to do with him.

This is why Shmurda says:

If I say goodbye my friend
I just wan to de on check, I just want to get that cheque,
And I no mean to offend
And if you look into my eyes and you go see I no dey lie,
Deep down for my mind I swear I get you for my mind

In his own defense, Bella Shmurda highlights his pursuit of the “Cheque” as his hustle for success by mentioning several countries he has to go to. It gets as real as possible.

Glibs

Bella Shmurda’s “My Friend” would have been a perfect song. Unfortunately, the glibs do no good to make it as convincible as it should sound.

It’s okay that Shmurda decided to chart a different course of song Concept through “My Friend”, and the song started with the right song lyrics, but the insertion of some love and sex lyrics are absolutely unneeded.

It gets to a point that listeners begin to juxtapose the correlation between his relationship with his friend and :

If some more thorough songwriting had been done on “My friend”, perhaps some lyrics that actually fit into the song concept would have been created.

If the insertion of the glibs was to make the song not sound boring, then this was unnecessary, because Bella Shmurda said some real things on “My friend” that makes you think about the relationship you have with people and how your pursuit of success affects such relationships.

However, as soon as the glibs come up, it waters down this effect, and we struggle to get back on track.

The painful thing is that the glibs are recycled over and over as though it were the chorus, and this makes listeners wonder if it is the center of the song, as the chorus itself is not highlighted as much as possible.

Apart from this,

“My Friend” is a highly relatable song because it offers the viewpoint of a famous person who has to do everything to ensure his continuance in success, and assure people that his person has not been lost in the process of chasing said success.

It begs for a mutual understanding that seeks to establish that there are so many constraints that come with fame itself, and such constraints affect relationships.
