The best 2021 Nigerian music videos
Below are the best 2021 Nigerian music videos. These videos are chosen based on Video setting, direction, compatibility with song, and replay value. In no particular order, here are the best music videos of 2021
10) “Bloody Samaritan” (Performance video) Ayra Starr
Video setting: 1.6/2
Direction: 1.4/2
Compatibility with song: 1.4/2
Replay value: 1.5/2
Sync/Choreography/Acting: 1.6/2
Total: 7.5/10
The original video for “Bloody Samaritan” left so much to be desired. The music video was not that compatible to the song. However, the performance video did so much that was required.
The video needed swag and attitude and although the original video wanted to do this, the assignment was not that understood and this led to the misconstrued idea that a group of teenagers could produce the kind of swag needed. It is therefore not surprising that the performance video has more views in comparison to the original music video.
Ayra Starr delivered the swag and attitude needed for the song, and the performance video had the setting necessary for that kind of song.
9) “Jo” Banky W
Director: Banky W
Video setting: 1.2/2
Direction: 1.8/2
Compatibility with song: 2/2
Replay value: 1.5/2
Sync/Choreography/Acting: 1.5/2
Total: 8/10
The wonderful thing about this video is its choreography. Adesua Etomi’s dance in the music video is legendary. It shows a great amount of dedication and rehearsal. The song lip syncing and dance rhythm is also noteworthy.
Although the direction could be better and the takes could have been more than one venue as this made the video monotonous, it still passes for a good music video

8) “Question” Burna Boy ft Don Jazzy
Director: TG Omori
Video setting: 1.5/2
Direction: 1.6/2
Compatibility with song: 1.9/2
Replay value: 1.4/2
Sync/Choreography/Acting: 1.3/2
Total: 7.7/10
I think one of the praiseworthy thing about Burna Boy is that he has not lost his originality. “Question” is not a unique music video, but it contains as much authenticity about not only Burna Boy but the life of an average African.
The music video clearly depicts how people will always hate other people who seem to be making it. It even gets to the extent of wishing the successful people dead. Burna Boy does not mince words in saying:
“Anything you wish me, dat be your portion”.
The video looks like it’s set in Accra, Ghana even though the poster on the barber’s shop signs Burkina Faso and Nsukka.
7) “Squander” Falz ft Niniola
Director: Falz, Old The Wave
Video setting: 1.8/2
Direction: 1.6/2
Compatibility with song: 1.4/2
Replay value: 1.9/2
Sync/Choreography/Acting: 1.5/2
Total: 8.2/10
The story behind “squander” is amazing! When you listen to the song, you will not easily decipher that it’s about different heists done by a group called “Squander”. They model it after the popular money heist series and plan to rob a wedding ground.
The ludicrous idea is what makes the essence of the video in the first place. It’s not supposed to sound smart because the group themselves are not smart.
The diversion created by stopping the music so they can rob the wedding floor makes it even more funny

Do you know how Disney’s Lion King looks so good. Yes, that is how beautiful this video is!
Songs like “Rain” are Perennial. In this new age of the Nigerian Music Industry, you rarely hear any singer singing about the Unity of Africans and hope for Africa as a continent with many dark shades and situations.
Yemi Alade and the Mzansi Youth Choir, clad in glamorous African and South-African attires, sang the heartwarming song on mountains and shrubs, with better coordinated choreography. The music video is indeed a sight to watch.
5) “Running to you” Chike Ft Simi
Video setting: 1.4/2
Direction: 1.3/2
Compatibility with song: 2/2
Replay value: 1.8/2
Sync/Choreography/Acting: 1.9/2
Total: 8.4/10
“Running to you” was the highlight of the beginning of 2021. The song was literally everywhere. Although it didn’t blow up immediately upon its release, it gradually garnered a lot of fan attention. “Running to you” music video is the most watched 2021 Nigerian music video with over 33 million views in YouTube
Although we may have our reservations about Simi and Chike not playing actually, lovers who will die for each other, it makes sense that they are the ones telling the story. The story ends on a touching note, with the guy dying for his girlfriend. It aims to pattern how true love should be unconditional so much that one is willing to give his life lover.
4) âWomanâ Simi
Director: Dammy Twitch
Video setting: 1.5/2
Direction: 1.8/2
Compatibility with song: 2/2
Replay value: 1.7/2
Sync/Choreography/Acting: 1.7/2
Total: 8.7/10
âWomanâ is one of Simiâs best music videos till date. The costume and expressiveness is on point, the way different scenes and images represent the song well is worthy of note. Itâs hard to believe this music video was not scripted to the letter.
Although the choreography needed a little more work. It still didnât water down the effect of the music video on viewers. The music video has so much replay value. The scenes and images are not recycled and itâs as though each scene is a new take. This adds an addictive touch to the song.
3) “For you” Teni ft Davido
Director: Dammy Twitch
Video setting: 2/2
Direction: 1.5/2
Compatibility with song: 2/2
Replay value: 2/2
Sync/Choreography/Acting: 1.7/2
Total: 9.2/10
Teniolaâs video titled âFor youâ is the first single taken from her Wondaland album which was released March 2021. First, great acting. Teni and Davidoâs acting contributed greatly to explaining the plot of the video. Their mime game is on point and Dammy Twitch did a fantastic work here in directing the video.
The music video exemplifies the unconditional love a couple have for each other and how they would do anything to be with each other. It is a slight reminder of how couples who love each other should not give up because of limiting factors.
The coherence between Davido and Teni is legendary. Itâs like that have been working together for a long time and they should do this more often because âFor youâ is a hit.
The end of the music video was amazing and realistic, Teni was caught again and Davido was declared wanted. It shows that if they really wanted to be together, then maybe Prison was where they could be together.
2) “Lie” Kizz Daniel
Director: The Alien
Video setting: 2/2
Direction: 1.8/2
Compatibility with song: 2/2
Replay value: 1.7/2
Sync/Choreography/Acting: 2/2
Total: 9.5/10
Kizz Daniel’s music video for “Lie” is like a movie. The music video complements the song so much. The dialogue at the beginning, the short story that backs up the song and forms the plot, as well as Kizz Daniel’s acting in the video, makes it a 100% take. If anything, it leaves no stone unturned at all.
Normally, a music video ought to express the singerâs intention for singing/writing the song, Kizz Daniel’s “Lie” achieves this purpose. Therefore, it is not a surprise that it is one of the best music videos of 2021.
1) âThe Bestâ Davido Ft Mayorkun
Director: Dammy Twitch
Video setting: 2/2
Direction: 1.7/2
Compatibility with song: 2/2
Replay value: 1.8/2
Sync/Choreography/Acting: 1.5/2
Total: 9/10
The main purpose of âThe Bestâ is to show that Davido is the best when it comes to music and when it comes to having a âMusic Godfatherâ. It might be more appropriate to call Davido a âCoachâ here but this may water down the essence of his impact on Mayorkunâs music career.
In âThe bestâ music video, we have a Chinese setting where Davido trains Mayorkun to be the best. The training is a vigorous one. The nice thing about this video is its portrayal of Davido giving instructions to Mayorkun like any master would.
In this scenario, Davido is the Kung Fu master and Mayorkun is his apprentice who not only learns from his master, but does his master proud by beating others in a tournament organized. Even Davido says:
âI learnt from myself. The best…baddestâ
The video adequately represents Mayorkunâs growth in the music industry and how he seems to be racing past a lot of other new artists. It shows Davido has not failed as a mentor and therefore, he is âThe bestâ.
