Ballon D’or review
For quite some time now, Nigerians have geared up for the release of “Ballon D’or” after its teaser was released a few months back. It was indeed something to look forward to because it featured two of the best artists in Nigeria.
On Tuesday, December 14, 2021, the song was released on all streaming platforms.
“Ballon D’or” is the fourth single off Burna Boy’s upcoming studio album. With some success, his first three singles “Kilometre”, “Want it all” and “Questions” ft Don Jazzy, were released.
Now, with the release of “Ballon D’or”, the question remains, “is it just another name collaboration or does it pass for a good song that will actually stay long with people?”
First, the title of the song arouses some curiosity, as the name “Ballon D’Or” refers to an annual football award presented by France Football- A French Magazine, and is seen as the most prestigious individual award for football players.
Get one thing right, whoever produced “Ballon d’Or” deserves an award. The sound engineering and the percussions are on point, but the song leaves some things to be desired.
First, there is an obviousity of Burna Boy having some slight problems of linking “Ballon D’Or” to a song. It’s just too abstract. He has the same clout like Messi, so people should give him a “Ballon D’Or”?
If the song had been given a different title, maybe something about love, it would have been more relatable, but even as Burna Boy opens the song, there is the struggle to understand the connection. Although Wizkid did superb on his verse, in fact, one of the best lyrics on a song so far, still, the fact that there is little connection between “Ballon D’Or” and the song waters down the powerful effect of his verse.
He ends up talking about love and how a lady is so into him, but still the connection is lacking.

If they had both talked more about “Ballon D’Or” and tried to metaphorically relate it to how powerful and prestigious they have become, the essence of this song would have been established.
Burna Boy does not get blame for trying to get creative, but this “Out of the box” creativity creates too much gap in the song relatability
On delivery, both Burna Boy and Wizkid are very good at song delivery and their delivery on this song is even near flawless. So that’s a hundred for them.
“Ballon D’Or” is more than a name collaboration, but the song could have been so much better. No doubt, it is a hit and will enjoy popularity in Nigeria, but if this song had been sung by other artists than Wizkid and Burna Boy, it would not enjoy the kind of attention it is getting. The delivery is on point, the lyrics are nice. The song engineering is flawless, but the song is too abstract.
