About The Witcher Blood Origin
The Witcher: Blood Origin is a fantasy miniseries created by Declan de Barra and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich adapted from The Witcher book series by Andrzej Sapkowski.
It serves as a prequel to the Netflix television series. The series premiered on December 25, 2022, and consists of four episodes.
Set 1,200 years before the events of The Witcher television series, Blood Origin will depict the creation of the first Witcher, as well as the events leading to the “Conjunction of the Spheres”.
It will also explore the ancient Elven civilization before its demise.
It was announced in July 2020 that Netflix had greenlit a six-part miniseries prequel to their television series adaptation of the Andrzej Sapkowski novels. Declan de Barra was hired to serve as showrunner.
In January 2021, Jodie Turner-Smith was cast to star in the series.
Laurence OâFuarain would join the cast in March, but by April, Turner-Smith had to exit due to scheduling conflicts.In July, Michelle Yeoh was added, with Sophia Brown taking over the role vacated by Turner-Smith.
Filming on the series began in August 2021 in the United Kingdom, with additional castings including Lenny Henry, Mirren Mack, Nathaniel Curtis and Dylan Moran announced.

De Bara announced it had finished filming and went into post-production in November 2021.
The first trailer for the series was released on December 17, 2021.
Another teaser trailer was released on November 10, 2022.
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 18 critics’ reviews, the show has an approval rating of 36% with an average rating of 5.3/10. The website’s critics consensus reads, “A shallow excavation of ancient lore from Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy series, Blood Origin shares ancestral DNA with The Witcher but little of what makes the mothership series memorable.”[21] On Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, the series has received a score of 49 out of 100 based on nine critic reviews, indicating “mixed or average reviews”.[22]
David Griffin reviewing it for IGN praised it for special effects, action scenes, and the “engaging band of misfits” as protagonists, but noted that the story villains were not very interesting.
Zosha Millman reviewing the series for Polygon criticized it for being mundane, writing that the show “has no time for consideration of what makes the Witcher universe unique or meaningful at all, leaving it as just a muddled, reckless attempt to get more Witcher stuff out the door”.
Andrew Webster writing for The Verge likewise argued that without the titular Witcher (Geralt of Rivia) or another memorable lead, the series lacks something special to make it stand on its own.
Therese Lacson writing for the Collider criticzed the series for its “slapdash storylines” and “half-baked” villains, and noted that too often the show “slips into either complete camp, cringe, or melodrama” .
Darren Mooney reviewing the show for The Escapist called it a “bloody mess” and a “spectacular misfire”, criticizing its characters as uninteresting, and “editorial tinkering” as clusmy and ineffective.
In the Slant Magazine, Niv M. Sultan in his revew wrote that “the series proves too hurried and scattered to penetrate much beyond the surface of its universe and characters.”.
Vicky Jessop in the London Evening Standard said that “it’s hard to feel invested in the fate of the characters”. David Opie writing for Digital Spy likewise criticized the cast, noting that “Most of these characters, and therefore Blood Origin itself, remain frustratingly limited.

The first season, consisting of eight episodes, was released on Netflix on December 20, 2019. It was based on The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, which are collections of short stories that precede the main The Witcher saga.
The second season, also consisting of eight episodes and based on the novel Blood of Elves, released on December 17, 2021. In September 2021, Netflix renewed the series for a third season, which will be released in mid-2023. This will be followed by a fourth season, featuring Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt of Rivia.
An animated origin story film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, was released on August 23, 2021. A prequel miniseries, The Witcher: Blood Origin, was released on December 25, 2022.
The story begins with Geralt of Rivia, Crown Princess Ciri of Cintra, and the sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg at different points of time, exploring formative events that shape their characters throughout the first season, before eventually merging into a single timeline.
Geralt and Ciri are linked by destiny since before she was born when he unknowingly demanded her as a reward for his services by invoking “the Law of Surprise”. After the two finally meet, Geralt becomes the princess’s protector and must help her and fight against her various pursuers to prevent her Elder Blood and powerful magic from being used for malevolent purposes and keep Ciri and their world safe.
Following Geralt of Rivia’s battle with a kikimora in 1231, he enters the town of Blaviken and meets Renfri, a cursed princess-turned-bandit.
She is hunted by the wizard Stregobor, who believes her evil for being born during an eclipse. Stregobor lures Geralt to his hideout, seeking to hire him to kill Renfri, but Geralt refuses. Renfri later offers Geralt a counter-proposal, but he refuses with an ultimatum: leave or die.
In 1263, Nilfgaard conquers the northern kingdom of Cintra. Princess Cirilla, also known as Ciri, is sent away by her grandmother, Queen Calanthe, to escape and find Geralt.
A Nilfgaardian officer Cahir captures Cirilla, but seeing the burning city and castle triggers her powers, allowing her to escape. In 1231, Renfri feigns agreement with the ultimatum, but upon waking up the next morning, Geralt realizes Renfri will not stop until Stregobor is dead, and he rushes to stop her.
After killing her men, he fights and fatally wounds Renfri, whose dying words tell of a girl in the forest who is his eternal destiny. Stregobor arrives to take Renfri’s body for autopsy. When Geralt opposes, the townsfolk force him to leave, urged on by Stregobor.
