Premise (Plot) of The Sandman
The Sandman Netflix series is a fantasy drama adapted from Neil Gaiman’s critically acclaimed DC comic series of the same name. It follows the story of Dream, also known as Morpheus, one of the seven immortal beings known as the Endless. Each Endless represents a universal force — Dream governs the world of dreams and stories, shaping the unconscious experiences of every living being. The show’s first season primarily adapts the first two volumes of the comic: Preludes & Nocturnes and The Doll’s House.
The series begins in 1916, when a cult led by Roderick Burgess, a British occultist, performs a ritual to capture Death and force her to bring back his dead son. However, the ritual goes wrong, and they mistakenly capture Dream instead. Trapped in a magical prison and stripped of his powerful tools — his pouch of dream sand, a helm made from the skull of a defeated god, and a ruby imbued with his essence — Dream remains imprisoned for over a century. During this time, the world suffers the effects of his absence. Millions fall into a mysterious sleeping sickness while nightmares roam free in the waking world.
When Dream finally escapes in the modern day, he returns to find his realm, the Dreaming, in ruins. Much of his power has weakened, and several nightmares and dreams have gone rogue. His first mission is to retrieve his stolen tools, which have fallen into dangerous hands. His pouch is now in the possession of a woman named Johanna Constantine, a supernatural investigator and exorcist. With her reluctant help, he retrieves it.
Next, Dream travels to Hell to reclaim his helm from a demon named Choronzon.
This leads to a tense confrontation with Lucifer Morningstar, ruler of Hell, who challenges Dream to a metaphysical duel of ideas. Dream eventually wins and retrieves his helm, impressing even Lucifer with his understanding of hope and creation. The ruby, however, is in the hands of John Dee, a mentally unstable man whose mother once worked for Burgess and stole the artifact. Dee uses the ruby to twist reality to his will, believing he can reshape the world into one based on truth by eliminating lies and illusions.
In one of the most disturbing episodes, Dee traps a group of people in a diner for 24 hours, using the ruby to manipulate their minds and strip away their facades. The result is a descent into madness, violence, and tragedy. Eventually, Dream confronts Dee, who shatters the ruby thinking it will destroy Dream. Instead, the destruction releases Dream’s full power, which had been locked inside the ruby. Rather than destroy Dee, Dream shows mercy and returns him to Arkham Asylum.
With his tools recovered and his realm being restored, Dream begins to rebuild order in the Dreaming.
However, his troubles are far from over. A powerful vortex named Rose Walker emerges in the waking world. A vortex is a rare phenomenon that threatens the very fabric of the Dreaming, as it can collapse the walls separating individual dreams, merging them into chaos. Rose is unaware of her abilities and is on a quest to find her lost brother, Jed, who has been placed in a nightmarish foster home.
As Rose’s powers grow, Dream investigates and discovers that her existence is destabilizing his realm. At the same time, several rogue dreams and nightmares, including The Corinthian, a charismatic and terrifying nightmare with mouths for eyes, are drawn to Rose. The Corinthian exploits her powers for his own ends, committing gruesome murders across the country and even attending a serial killer convention disguised as a motivational event.
Ultimately, Dream confronts the Corinthian and uncreates him, asserting his authority as Lord of Dreams.
He then turns to Rose, explaining that as a vortex, she must die to protect reality. However, Rose’s grandmother, Unity Kinkaid, reveals a shocking secret — she was meant to be the original vortex, but when Dream was imprisoned, her destiny was delayed. Unity sacrifices herself, transferring the vortex power from Rose to herself, and dies peacefully. Rose is saved, and balance is restored.
In the final scenes, Dream begins crafting a new nightmare to replace the Corinthian and mends his strained relationship with his siblings, especially Death, who offers him wisdom and compassion. Meanwhile, Lucifer plots revenge against Dream, hinting at a much larger conflict to come. She secretly tells a demon that she intends to do something that will make God absolutely furious, setting the stage for a dramatic escalation in future seasons.
The Sandman intricately blends myth, horror, fantasy, and philosophy, presenting a story about responsibility, change, forgiveness, and the nature of dreams and reality.

Cast & Characters of The Sandman
The Sandman features a diverse and powerful ensemble cast portraying a wide range of mystical, mortal, and monstrous characters. Each character plays a vital role in the dreamscape Neil Gaiman created, and the Netflix adaptation faithfully brings them to life with layered performances and striking visuals.
At the heart of the series is Tom Sturridge as Dream (also known as Morpheus, the Sandman, and Oneiros), the central protagonist and the Endless who rules over dreams. Sturridge portrays Dream as a stoic, regal, and enigmatic figure with a cold sense of duty.
Over the course of the season, Dream evolves from a withdrawn and vengeful being into a more introspective ruler who questions his role and begins to change. Boyd Holbrook portrays The Corinthian, a rogue nightmare who escapes the Dreaming during Dream’s imprisonment. He is charismatic, cunning, and deadly, with a terrifying design — his eye sockets are mouths that devour the souls of his victims.
Holbrook’s performance is charming and menacing in equal measure. The Corinthian becomes a serial killer and inspires others like him, even attending a “Cereal Convention” filled with murderers who idolize him.
Vivienne Acheampong takes on the role of Lucienne, Dream’s loyal librarian and closest advisor. Originally a male character in the comics (Lucien), Lucienne is the keeper of every story and memory in the Dreaming. She holds the Dreaming together in Dream’s absence and becomes a voice of reason and compassion throughout his return.
Acheampong gives Lucienne both authority and empathy, often challenging Dream when necessary.
Gwendoline Christie plays Lucifer Morningstar, the ruler of Hell. Christie brings an imposing and elegant presence to the character, who appears calm and diplomatic but harbors deep resentment and ambition.
Her scenes with Dream are filled with tension and poetic dialogue. She is a fallen angel who governs demons and damned souls but is not without her own sense of pride and tragedy. Her promise of future retaliation sets up an even greater conflict for upcoming seasons.
David Thewlis portrays John Dee, a disturbed man with immense power through Dream’s ruby. Thewlis’s performance is subtle and deeply unsettling. John was raised in Arkham Asylum, driven mad by his mother’s obsession with the occult and by the influence of the ruby. He believes he’s helping the world by eliminating lies, but his good intentions twist into horror. The infamous diner episode shows the terrifying consequences of his ideology.
Jenna Coleman plays Johanna Constantine, a gender-swapped version of John Constantine from the comics. She’s an exorcist-for-hire who is sarcastic, cynical, and haunted by her past failures.
