About
My Life with the Walter Boys is an American television series that premiered on Netflix on December 7, 2023.
The coming-of-age drama is an adaptation of Ali Novak’s 2014 novel of the same name, which was first published on Wattpad.
The series follows recently-orphaned Jackie Howard (Nikki Rodriguez), a teenage girl from Manhattan who relocates to rural Colorado after she is taken in by the Walters, a family of ten sons. The series was developed by Melanie Halsall, and co-written by Halsall and Ali Novak. It stars Marc Blucas, Alisha Newton, and Sarah Rafferty
Sony Pictures Television and iGeneration Studios are producing My Life with the Walter Boys, following iGeneration Studios’ acquisition of Komixx Entertainment. Ed Glauser, who was the executive producer for Netflix’s The Kissing Booth film series, joined production alongside showrunner and executive producer Melanie Halsall.
Filming for the series began in March 2022, in Alberta, Canada, and concluded by September 2022.
Production for the series took place across Alberta, with filming locations in the city of Calgary, the town of Cochrane, and the town of Crossfield
My life with the Walter Boys borders on a writing that is supported by a basic plot. This in itself hurts the writing because the whole series is built around what we are already familiar with, hence we know what each character will say or do even before they say it. Deciding whether the writing is good or not then becomes a function of dialogue reliability or intensity.
The presentation of characters like Cole, Erin and Alex are all too basic with little to no revamping. The characterization disappoint largely because there is nothing new, unique or outstanding about them. Cole is the cliché “hot guy” who is not only “dumb” but “doesn’t date but hook up with girls”, and is suddenly paying attention to “Jackie”. Give us a break from these “Kissing Booth” storylines
But while we have seen the all-too-familiar plot of My life with the Walter boys, we might be interested in Jackie’s journey as a young, beautiful, and brilliant young woman processing grief and her newly found crush on the Walter boys. Still, it’s nothing we’ve not seen before. But based on the plot overall, My life with the Walter boys has a small chance of being an enjoyable binge. The presence of a very huge family- close to six or more boys, makes it look like an interesting watch.
The action is not actually disappointing, and the characters try and step into their role effortlessly.
The main star of the film, who plays the character of Jackie, (Nikki Rodriguez),is new on screen, but she majorly, provides the juice that sustains our interest in the movie. For the first episode, although we get comfortable with the characters, there is nothing really distinguishable about them. They all fall into the cliché of teen romantic high-school series. Also, it makes the series awfully reminiscent of Prime Video’s hit series “The Summer I Turned Pretty”.
The plot of My life with the Walter Boys follows a young girl- Jackie, who lost her mum, Dad and elder sister in a tragic car accident- basically her whole family. The backstory of the series starts on a note of grief, and tries to transcend the viewers into its main theme-romance.
