Lai Mohammed- The Minister of Information and Culture has demanded that before social media platforms should be allowed to operate in Nigeria, they must first be registered with the country.
Following the recent ban on Twitter, the Minister of Information and Culture has demanded that all social media platforms be registered with and Licensed by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC)
According to Pulse NG, it was revealed that in a Media Press briefing on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, Twitter was banned in Nigeria because the activities of its users could “harm the corporate existence of Nigeria”.
He further revealed that:
The company has reached out to the government for high level talks to resolve the stalemate that has left millions without access to the popular platform.

The registration of these platforms with the Government means that the Government will be able to regulate the activities of the users, thereby limiting free speech. Because, in Lai Mohammed’s statement, he faulted Twitter CEO- Jack Dorsey for “funding” the #ENDSARS protest.

When these platforms register with Nigeria, especially since it has now become a condition for Twitter’s ban to be lifted, we will cross our fingers in expectation of the regulations that will follow their use.
