In Driftmark, House Velaryon faces a succession crisis when Corlys Velaryon is wounded in the Stepstones. Vaemond Velaryon decides to petition King’s Landing to remove Lucerys Velaryon as heir on account of his illegitimacy.
Hearing of this, Rhaenyra and Daemon return to the capital with all their children to defend Lucerys’ claim.
They discover that King Viserys is now bedridden and all affairs are run by Queen Alicent and Ser Otto in his stead. Alicent covers up for her son Aegon when he is unfaithful to his wife. As Vaemond arrives in the Red Keep, Rhaenyra makes a deal with Princess Rhaenys to get her support. She also asks her father to defend her, quoting Aegon I’s dream.
The next day, Otto Hightower hears to Vaemond Velaryon’s petition, who claims that Driftmark should pass to him. As Rhaenyra begins speaking, King Viserys arrives and declares Lucerys as heir. Enraged, Vaemond calls Rhaenyra’s children bastards and is killed by Daemon.
That night, the Targaryens and Hightowers hold a feast to mend their relations, but the princes start a fight. Viserys, on the verge of death, tells of Aegon I’s dream to Alicent.
House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series that is a prequel to the television series Game of Thrones (2011â2019), both based on the A Song of Ice and Fire books by George R. R. Martin.
The prequel series was created by Martin and Ryan J. Condal for HBO and is based on portions of Martinâs 2018 novel Fire & Blood.
Condal and Miguel Sapochnik are showrunners for House of the Dragon. Set two hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to and covering the Targaryen war of succession, known as the âDance of the Dragonsâ.

House of the Dragon received a straight-to-series order in October 2019 with casting beginning in July 2020 and principal photography starting in April 2021 in the United Kingdom. The series is scheduled to premiere on August 21, 2022. Its first season will consist of ten episodes.
The reign of House Targaryen begins. House of the Dragon, the prequel to Game of Thrones, is coming to HBO and HBO Max on August 21. Based on George R.R. Martinâs âFire & Blood,â the series, which is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of House Targaryen.
Paddy Considine (HBOâs The Third Day and The Outsider), Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Olivia Cooke, Emma DâArcy, Steve Toussaint (Itâs a Sin, Doctor Who), Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Fabien Frankel and Rhys Ifans to star. Additional cast members include Milly Alcock, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Emily Carey, Harry Collett, Ryan Corr, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jefferson Hall, David Horovitch, Wil Johnson, John Macmillan, Graham McTavish, Ewan Mitchell, Theo Nate, Matthew Needham, Bill Paterson, Phia Saban, Gavin Spokes, and Savannah Steyn.
Martin and Ryan Condal serve as co-creators on the series. Miguel Sapochnik and Condal are showrunners, and the pair also serve as executive producers along with Martin, Sara Hess, Jocelyn Diaz, Vince Gerardis and Ron Schmidt. Clare Kilner and Geeta Vasant Patel also direct the series. Greg Yaitanes is director and co-executive producer. Game of Thrones and Westworld composer Ramin Djawadi scored the series.

The adaptation of George R. R. Martinâs book Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon, received a straight-to-series order the following month. Showrunners Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, who received an Emmy for directing the episode âBattle of the Bastards,â were chosen.
Additionally, the seriesâ debut as well as additional episodes would be helmed by apochnik.
The series is set during King Viserys I Targaryenâs reign, 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and it eventually leads to the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. The project is a revision of the Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogmanâs officially passed-up spin-off plan.
Casting
In July 2020, casting got under way. Viserys I Targaryen will be played by Paddy Considine starting in October 2020. Danny Sapani initiated negotiations to join in an undefined role in December.
Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, and Emma DâArcy had been cast as Alicent Hightower, Daemon Targaryen, and Rhaenyra Targaryen, respectively. Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, and Sonoya Mizuno joined the main cast in February 2021. As Ser Criston Cole, Fabien Frankel joined the cast in April. Graham McTavish was seen in his complete attire on the set in May. In July 2021, Milly Alcock and Emily Carey joined the cast.
Photography
The ten-episode first season of the showâs principal photography commenced in April 2021. [20] The majority of the seriesâ filming took place in the UK.
Cornwall was the location for filming the final week of April 2021.
Additionally, portions of the first season were filmed in Spain and California, claims Production List.
The new virtual production stage at Warner Bros. Leavesden Studios was used for the first time during the filming of House of the Dragon.
Production was stopped for two days on July 18, 2021, due to a positive COVID-19 case.
