About
Berlin (also known as Money Heist: Berlin, in Spanish La casa de papel: BerlĂn) is a Spanish TV series created by Ălex Pina and Esther MartĂnez Lobato for Netflix.
The series serves as a prequel to Money Heist, focusing on the life of AndrĂ©s de Fonollosa, aka âBerlinâ, before the events of seasons 1 and 2 of the original series. It stars Pedro Alonso, Michelle Jenner, TristĂĄn Ulloa, Begoña Vargas, and Julio Peña FernĂĄndez.
The series premiered on Netflix on 29 December 2023 and consisted of eight episodes.
Set in an âundefined pastâ before the events of Money Heist, Berlin focuses on Berlin while at his prime, as he prepares one of his most extraordinary heists in his career as a robber: stealing âŹ44 million in jewels as if it was an illusionism act. To do this, he has the help of one of the three gangs he has robbed with in his life, formed by Keila (Michelle Jenner), DamiĂĄn (TristĂĄn Ulloa), Cameron (Begoña Vargas), Bruce (Joel SĂĄnchez) and Roi (Julio Peña FernĂĄndez).
The series is primarily set in Paris.
In late November 2021, just days before the release of the second volume of the fifth part of Money Heist, Netflix announced that it was developing a spin-off series, Berlin, for a tentative 2023 release, with Pedro Alonso expected to reprise his eponymous role from the original series. On September 28, 2022, Michelle Jenner, Begoña Vargas, Tristån Ulloa, Julio Peña Fernåndez and Joel Sånchez were cast to co-star alongside Alonso. In March 2023, it was announced that Itziar Ituño and Najwa Nimri would also be reprising their roles as Raquel Murillo and Alicia Sierra from Money Heist.
Filming began in October 2022 in Paris, France, and continued in Madrid, Spain.
Creators Alex Pina and Esther MartĂnez Lobato wanted to do something âlighterâ after their previous recent projects. In comparison to its parent show Money Heist, Berlin has more comedic tones and employed more actors and locations. The series was shot in a wider screen 2:1 ratio to give the characters âmore of a scenic experience of their surrounding.
Berlin (AndrĂ©s de Fonollosa) is a fictional character in the Netflix series Money Heist and in its prequel spin-off, Berlin, portrayed by Pedro Alonso. A terminally ill grand larcenist, jewel thief, and cracksman, he is the Professorâs second-in-command and brother. He has a romantic interest (Berlin Netflix Cast Camille)
The police find out that Berlinâs real name is AndrĂ©s de Fonollosa and that he is terminally ill during part 1. Meanwhile, he starts a coercive relationship with a hostage named Ariadna. In the final minutes of part 2, Berlin sacrifices himself so that the gang can escape, dying under police fire. Despite his death, he appears in a main role in part 3 through flashbacks to several years earlier, showing his original planning of the Bank of Spain heist and being married to a woman named Tatiana. Berlin is seen to be proficient in other languages than Spanish including English, Italian and Portuguese.
Alonsoâs portrayal of the character was inspired by a chance encounter Alonso had the day before receiving his audition script with âan intelligent personâ who was âprovocative or even manipulativeâ to him.
Writer Esther Lobato Martinez said Berlin was designed, like all the characters, with âshades of light and dark applied to each so they are both relatable and immoralâ as the story unfolded, so that Berlin could be perceived as likeable despite being oppressive to the hostages early on.
Similarities between Berlin and Najwa Nimriâs character Zulema in Pinaâs TV series Locked Up were unintentional.
The family connection between the Professor and Berlin was not in the original script, but was built into the charactersâ backstory at the end of part 1 after Morte and Alonso had repeatedly proposed to do so.
The writers decided to bring Berlin back for flashbacks in part 3, as they felt the character had gone through a sufficient redemption arc and was popular with the audience.
According to writer Javier GĂłmez Santander, Berlin might not have been killed off at the end of part 2 if the writers had known of the seriesâ renewal.
Camilleâs Extra-Marital Affair with Berlin
In response, Berlin conveys that heâs not interested in a superficial affair. However, when Berlin realizes his rejection of her, he cannot suppress his emotions, ultimately following her and sharing a kiss.
Camille and Berlin maintain their relationship discreetly until François discovers their communication, putting Camille in a dilemma. François offers to give her the child sheâs longed for, leading Camille to believe that heâs her true love, and Berlin is merely a passing infatuation. Camille decides not to leave François, especially when heâs arrested after authorities uncover the robbery at his auction house. Berlin stands by Camille, supporting her claim of Françoisâ innocence.
Susi, Camilleâs friend, urges her to question Berlinâs loyalty. Upon breaking into Berlinâs apartment, Camille discovers he was the thief. Furthermore, she learns that François has a second family, while Berlin Netflix Cast Camille has been yearning for just one child.
Inside Françoisâ personal safe, Camille finds documents revealing his double life. Susi advises Camille to break ties with both François and Berlin, as theyâve caused her immense hurt.
They intend to demand 40% of Berlinâs heist earnings. Eventually, Camille tracks down Berlin and reconnects with him, secretly recording their conversation.
Despite acquiring Berlinâs admission and attempting to blackmail him, their scheme falls short as Berlin outsmarts them. He successfully deletes the recorded conversation. Nevertheless, he concedes to the extortion, handing over the money Camille demanded. Berlin does so while reminding her that he played a role in dismantling her marriage, which lacked the depth of a true partnership with François.
Moreover, he admits that their affection for each other was genuine; his involvement wasnât driven by personal gain but by risking everything he had.
Among the notes provided by Berlin to Camille is the name of a bar in Singapore. Whether Camille chooses to pursue the address remains undisclosed. Thatâs Berlin Netflix Cast Camille explained.
