DONALD TRUMP SUCCESSFULLY IMPEACHED THE SECOND TIME.
On January 13, 2021, the House of Representatives voted to start a second impeachment trial of the 45th president of the United States- Donald Trump. This was occasioned by the storming of the United States Capitol. If you could remember well, the storming of the United States Capitol was a violent riot attack which happened on January 6, 2021. It was targeted against the 117th United States Congress. After he lost the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden, Trump organized a rally and this ‘inspired’ his supporters to organize a riot against the congress.
Before we get to the details of how Trump was successfully impeached, let us take a quick flashback to his first impeachment trial and why it was unsuccessful. His first impeachment trial started in the United States senate on January 6, 2020. Trump was charged with abuse of power and obstruction of the Congress. The proponents of the charges were Adam Schiff, Jerry Nadler, and Hakeem Jeffries among others.
On January 21, 2020, the Republicans in the house voted to counter the charges brought by the democrats. The trial lasted two whole weeks and 6 days. Meanwhile, the major cause of the first impeachment trial was because Trump was alleged for seeking help from Ukraine to rig the 2020 United States presidential election.
On February 5, 2020, Trump was acquitted by the senate following the failure of the senate not being able to obtain 2/3 majority votes against him. Now, let us get into his second impeachment trial which was successful.
In the Second Impeachment trial which was formalized on January 13, 2021, the major charge brought against him was ‘Incitement of insurrection’ (Riot or Chaos). The key proponents of these charges were Speaker of the House of Representatives (Nancy Pelosi) and the house Majority leader –Steny Hoyer
Donald Trump incited a riot where his supporters stormed the Capitol, well, why the Capitol? The answer is not far-fetched. The Congress convened at the Capitol on January 6, 2021 to count the electoral votes and formalize the victory of Joe Biden.
Meanwhile, the Major cause of the charges brought against him was that he pressured Brad Raffensperger (The State of Georgia’s secretary of State) to interfere in the 2020 presidential elections. It was this that consequently led to the storming of the U.S Capitol.
Eventually, he was impeached on January 13, 2021, becoming the first U.S President to be impeached twice. According to BBC, after he was impeached, Trump released a video calling on to his followers to remain peaceful. He also didn’t mention anything about his impeachment. He said ‘Violence and vandalism have no place in this country…no true supporter of mine would ever endorse political violence’
However, that is not all. Trump faces trial in the upper chamber in the senate but not after he leaves office next week 20th of January. At the trial, Senators could/would vote to bar him from not ever holding public office again.
If Donald Trump is convicted before he leaves office next week Wednesday, he would consequently be removed from office and his vice-president Mike Pence would become the next president of the United States- The 46th president of the United States. It would also make Mike Pence’s presidential term the shortest ever in U.S presidential history.
If you are wondering if Trump has been impeached again. Yes, and this time successfully. However, the Senate may or may not decide to convict him and remove him from office before he leaves office next week Wednesday.
