The Smart Money Woman series was released to Netflix on September 16, 2021 through the book adaptation of the same name written by Arese Ugwu.

■Osas Ighodaro as Zuri
In the series, Zuri is the major character and we see her financial crisis first before that of her friends. She comes to a realization that she should spend money on only the things she need and not on aso-ebi and exotic clothes and bags. She even sells her car to buy a cheaper one.
Although her financial-cleanse journey is a tumultuous one, she records some amount of sucess and ends up investing at the end of the series.
■Toni Tones as Lara
Lara is the only Smart Money Woman throughout the series. She has a very good job and makes continual savings from her monthly earn. However, she is the breadwinner of her family and reazlizes that her family sucks her dry and have no respect for how she toils hard to earn her money.
■Ini-dima Okojie as Tami
Tami comes from a wealthy family, and she owns a fashion store, but her priorities are off. She wants to date rich guys and has no interest in investment until her fashion store faces crises and she has to do something compulsorily about her financial status.
■Kemi Lala Akindoju as Adesuwa
Unlike the other woman, Adesuwa is married, and she is a very good lawyer who gets paid well. But she runs a joint account with her jobless husband who leaves her in a financial crisis even though she has been saving for a very long period of time. She has no choice but to start her saving plans all over again.
■Ebenezer Eno as Ladun
Ladun’s husband’s family are very rich. Her husband works in his father’s company and she is a stay at home wife. She buys luxury things and revels with her husband’s money. Unfortunately, her husband’s father dies having owed a huge debt to banks, they lose their house and almost all their income.
■Timini Egbuson as Bobby
Bobby is a Yahoo Boy who loves to spend ridiculous amounts of money on Tami. She doesn’t complain about this, and she loves his lifestyle.
■Seun Ajayi as Soji
Soji is Adesuwa’s husband. He is not only jobless, he spends his wife’s money on other girls and stays out all night enjoying himself while his wife works all day. He yells at her anytime she questions him. Finally, he withdraws all the money his wife has in their joint account and runs away with it.
■Eso Dike Okolocha as Tsola
He is Zuri’s love interest. He guides Zuri on her journey to financial freedom and their relationship almost hit rocks because of this.
■Eku Edewor as Banke
Banke is married into a rich family. Her husband’s father is a Minister. Although they don’t have enough money, she spends outrageous amounts of money on her child’s one year birthday just to show off to people.

Lessons to learn from Smart Money Woman:
1 Tracking your expenses.
In the movie, Zuri (character played by Osas Ighodaro) starts a money cleanse and decides to track all her expenses. This was how she found out that she was spending so much on Aso-Ebi, outings and shopping.
This teaches us to write down everything we spent money on in the last month. Therefore, we should separate our finding into wants and needs. We should then limits our wants and prioritize our needs.
Learn to spend with intention by allocating your resources to reflect the lifestyle you want and are able to afford.
2 Spending Triggers
Tsola finally asks Zuri on a date, her friends insist she must shop for a dress. They also book a hair and make-up session, causing Zuri to go against her money cleanse rules.
Based on this, we are implored to think back on every time we have ever spent or engaged in behaviors that are against the money goals we have set.
Make a list of things that trigger you to overspend and make a list of ways to avoid these triggers.
3 Building an Emergency Fund
Tami (Character played by Ini-dima Okojie) faces a business crises that causes her to lose her money.

A Smart woman does not wait for financial surprises; she systematically saves towards her emergency fund because she knows that this is the foundation of her financial journey.
An Emergency Fund is not there to make you money, but to act as a financial cushion that protects your long term investments from short term unexpected expenses
4 Investing Money
Tsola advises Zuri to start investing money and he introduces her to a friend- Omosede, who guides Zuri on her investment journey.
This asks us the question:
“Do we really want to start investing?”.
Well then,
1) We should establish our investment goals
2) We should develop an investment strategy
3) Consequently, we should determine our risk profile
The Cardinal rule for making investments is that you should not invest in things you don’t understand.
5 Relationship and Money
Adesuwa is a working mom and also the bread-winner of her home. She shares a joint account with her husband- Soji- who doesn’t have a job, has debts and really bad spending habits.

This teaches us that when couples are coming together, a discussion about the expectations of each person’s responsibility is critical!
We all come from different backgrounds and carry our own money biases and we often assume a synergy with our significant other that may not succeed when it comes to making financial decisions.
