Hey boy Sia featuring Burna Boy

Hey boy Sia featuring Burna Boy

Hey boy Sia Ft Burnaboy: Here are our first thoughts

On Monday January 11 2021, Australian Singer-Songwriter Sia revealed on Instagram that the remix of her hit song ‘Hey Boy’ would feature Burna boy. She did this by uploading a picture of the artwork on her page. Then, on Tuesday January 12 2021, she posted again on Twitter informing every one of the release of the song today- Thursday 14, 2021.

‘Hey boy’ was initially released in November 2020 and it was a successful song. It was written by Sia with Kamille and Jesse Shatlan. ‘Hey boy’ is off her upcoming ‘music’ album scheduled to be released in February 2021. It would also be accompanied by her Musical film also titled ‘Music’

Well, here are our first thoughts on the song and music video.

THE SONG

‘Hey boy’ starts funky. It initially sounds like the old American music style with Sia’s powerful voice opening in a feisty way. By the time Sia gets through the first verse, we are already addicted to ‘Hey boy’. It is just too thrilling to not fall in love with. I love the lyrics. Sia sets a very good pace in the song and by the time Burna Boy sings his verse, we have fallen head over heels in love with the song.

Read also: Made in Lagos: Album review

The lyrics go ‘Hey boy, what you got for me? Come around now. Hey boy, better run now!’ The song is not slow or emotional and this makes it more interesting and fun to listen to. When you listen to Burna’s verse, you would notice that the afrobeats is not eradicated even though he sounds quite American.

Computing Category

‘Hey boy’ is not a disappointment at all! You should totally listen to it. If you haven’t been a fan of Sia. This song would make you go back and listen to her other songs. You would also impatiently wait for Sia’s upcoming album titled ‘Music’, since this song is from it.

THE VIDEO

I have never seen an animation music video. I was slightly not pleased when I saw that ‘Hey boy’ is total animation. Still, it doesn’t make it bad at all. Even if I opine that it should have had a real music video, we must be realistic with ourselves. It might be quite impossible to shoot the music video considering the second wave of covid-19 and how a lot of restrictions have been put in place. Besides, Sia and Burna live in different continents, so it just might not be feasible.

Again, if ‘hey boy’ had a real music video, it might be hard to see or believe the romantic connection between Sia and Burna considering their age. Burna is around 27, while Sia is 45 years old. It just might not be very believable even if we have seen such before. Therefore, the animation video best does justice to our believability.

Deal of the day

‘Hey boy’ visuals are attractive and the graphics are equally compelling. Kudos to Sia on this music video. One would totally fall in love with how Sia goes on up on stage and throws away her microphone. The stage lifts her up and she enters into a ‘space-like’ environment where she is surrounded with plethora of images and objects, and expressions of her desires for Burna boy. The music video is not disappointing either.

Truth be told, ‘Hey boy’ would do well and people are going to love it.

Sia and BurnaBoy

Sia has been active 1990 and you could call her one of the greatest musicians that ever lived. If you don’t know, she produced ‘Diamonds’ with Rihanna. After having a successful career in Australia, she moved to London, England where she had her first debut in the U.S Billboard 200 with her sixth studio album ‘1000 forms of fear’

She has nine Grammy nominations and an MTV Video Music award. She has also received 12 ARIA awards (The Australian Recording Industry Association music Awards).

If you are wondering why she likes to cover her face a lot, she does it to protect her privacy. In fact, she took a hiatus from singing once due to been uncomfortable of her ever increasing fame. She has two children.

For Burna Boy, this is his second international collaboration in two years; the first one being with Sam Smith’s ‘Oasis’. We could not be happier for him

‘Hey boy’ remix featuring Burna Boy is available on all platforms!

14 gospel songs you should be listening to

14 gospel songs you should be listening to

14 gospel songs you should be listening to!

Gospel songs have a way of turning our lives around in ways we never expect. They give us peace of mind about disturbing situations and circumstances. They also give us assurance about those circumstances and keep us spirit-filled. We just cannot live without them, and it is in light of these that we bring you 14 gospel songs you should be listening to right now!

1 ‘Now’- Ada Ehi
2 ‘Na you dey reign’- Mercy Chinwo
3 ‘Set me on fire’- Tomi favored
4 ‘Olorun Agbaye’- Nathaniel Bassey ft. Chandler Moore
5 ‘Love will always win’- Travis Greene
6 ‘Heaven at last’- Minister GUC
7 ‘Seated on the throne’- Oche Jonkings
8 ‘Sparrows’- Cory Asbury
9 ‘Wide as the sky’- Matt Redman
10 ‘Have my heart’- Chandler Moore and Chris Brown
11 ‘Raise a hallelujah’- Jonathan and Melissa Hesser
12 ‘This is a move’- Tasha Cobbs and Brandon Lake
13 ‘Won’t let go’- Travis Greene
14 ‘Holy Ghost’- Bri Babineaux

1 ‘Now’ By Ada Ehi

Listen to this song with the intent of making bold declarations and with a form of alignment that not only uplifts your spirit, but make things begin to change immediately. The songs says ‘The lord has spoken once, we have heard him twice. All the power and glory belongs to him. We are filled with his spirit and authority’. The song is taken from Ada Ehi’s latest ‘Born of God’ album and it is my favorite.

2 ‘Na you dey reign’ By Mercy Chinwo

So, I’ve had this song for quite some time on my phone. Then, one day, I was listening to music and it slid in. Despite being a danceable tempo, it was on repeat for several days! It gives you a wonderful feeling of pride of salvation and puts you in the mood to praise God. I can’t wait to see the live performance of this song! It is taken from her latest album ‘Satisfied’.

MERCY CHINWO

3 ‘Set me on fire’ Tomi Favored.

TOMI FAVORED

‘Set me on fire’ is taken from Tomi’s ‘Ignite’ song. I first saw a sponsored post on Instagram about this song and I made a choice to listen to it. I didn’t know who Tomi is, and I haven’t listened to any of her songs before. But now I will look out more for her songs. This song can literally set you on a spiritual fire! especially when you are praying. She says ‘Jesus, we will live out loud for you’

4 ‘Olorun Agbaye’ Nathaniel Bassey ft. Chandler Moore and Oba

Honestly, this song should not have been special considering that ‘Olorun Agbaye o, you are mighty’, is a lyric/song we’ve all known since we were young. However, Chandler’s verse combined with Nathaniel Bassey’s and Oba’s just makes it Brand new+ so spiritual. It is an exaltation of God in a very impressive and spirit lifting way. Bassey says ‘By the blood you have shed we have overcome, discharged and acquitted for life!’

(Click the image to get the latest 2021 OPEN HEAVENS devotional at a discount!)

It makes you think of the whole salvation process. The chorus goes ‘You have a track record of keeping your word’ the song will make you think deeply about God, and if you set your mind right, see God in his glory.

5 ‘Love will always win’ by Travis Greene
Travis Greene creates a special song with ‘Love will always win’. He underscores how the decisions we have made have pitted us against one another. He says ‘I see so much war, do we know what we are fighting for? There is a truth that just might save us; love will always win’. Honestly, you should see the music video too, it explains the song 200%

TRAVIS GREENE

6 ‘Heaven at last’ Minister GUC

MINISTER GUC

Taken from his recent ‘The message’ album, ‘Heaven at last’ is a plea song to God to take us to heaven; to experience it and also prepare us for the second coming of Christ. It keeps you on your feet about one of the major reasons of salvation. The song says ‘Patiently waiting for the time when you will take me to the place where I belong. Earnestly waiting…’

7 ‘Seated on the throne’ by Oche Jonkings.
I don’t know how I came by this song but I know I was searching gospel songs on YouTube (Vidmate to be specific). The song just came up and I was attracted by the title. I love songs that draw crystal images of God and heaven in my mind, and that is what ‘Seated on the throne’ does. Oche sings ‘You are seated on the throne, the Lion and the Lamb’- a reference to God and Jesus.

8 ‘Sparrows’ Cory Asbury

CORY ASBURY

‘The sparrows don’t worry about tomorrow, or the troubles to come. The lilies aren’t thinking of the seasons, so why should I be?’ This intro is all we need to remind ourselves of how God takes care of us and the whole world. If you listened to Nathaniel’s Bassey’s ‘Wonderful wonder’, then Cory Asbury combines the appreciation of nature and a comparison to how Nature leaves everything to God and why we should to. Cory sums up the song by saying, ‘I can’t even get past your kindness’

9 ‘Wide as the sky’ Matt Redman

MATT REDMAN

There was a time late last year that all I did was wake up in the morning and listen to this song. The lyrics are heavily beautiful in adulation of God! The song says ‘Hands up, hearts open wide as the sky…hands up, hearts open wide as we cry. Lord we lift your name on high’. Then Matt Redman goes. ‘Let all the other names fade away until there is only you…’
The song makes us recognize the sovereignty of God over earth and how we should worship that.

10 ‘Have my heart’ Maverick music ft. Chandler Moore and Chris Brown

When I first discovered this song, I was like ‘What! Where have you been?’ The song can bring tears to your eyes. It adequately exemplifies one’s submission to God and how God accepts us just as we are and renews our nature.
My best lines are ‘You love with no reservation, you are not looking for perfection. There is no need in me pretending, I give you everything’. Chandler Moore and Chris Brown make this song perfect, just too perfect… It is so spirit-filed. Also, the chorus is heartwarming and easy to learn.

11 ‘Raise a hallelujah (Bethel music) Jonathan and Melissa Hesser
Raise a hallelujah is a victory song and it originally sprung up in the mind of the singer when a boy was declared to be dead in the hospital. The singer then goes, ‘I raise a hallelujah in the presence of my enemies, I raise a hallelujah, louder than the unbelief’.
The song solidifies your assurance in Jesus. It gives you a certification that the antics of the devil are just what they are- antics. Sing this song in the middle of tribulations and allow peace to flood your heart.

12 ‘This is a move’ Tasha Cobbs ft. Brandon Lake

TASHA COBBS

I have been a fan of Tasha Cobbs for God knows how long. I love how she combines lyrics in a powerful way and how extremely spirit-filled her songs are. She even has a Grammy award! ‘This is a move’ is just too powerful, too compelling to explain. It’s like an encounter song with Jesus

13 ‘Won’t let go’ by Travis Greene

If you listened to ‘Reckless love’ by Cory Asbury and loved it (I mean, who doesn’t love the song tho?), then you should totally listen to ‘Won’t let go’. It opens with ‘You fill me up straight for the journey’. A reference to how God provides everything we need for something but we don’t notice or pay attention. Travis goes ‘When I am ready to give up lord you won’t let me, oh you keep holding me’. The song accentuates how God will never give up on us even when we are ready to give up on ourselves.

14 ‘Holy Ghost’: Maverick city ft. Bri Babineaux. The song is a cry out for the fresh infilling of the Holy Ghost. ‘Oh how I need you more…a fresh outburst. With no resistance I give permission. Come now, invade my heart’. It bridges an amazing communication with the Holy Spirit.

Honorable mention
* ‘Grace’ cover by Johnny Drille
Do yourself a favor and listen to this gratitude cover song by Johnny Drille. It is so wonderful!
This is our list of 14 gospel songs you should be listening to right now. Which one have you listened to? And which is your favorite? Let us know in the comment section!

MADE IN LAGOS ALBUM REVIEW

October 30, 2020, Wizkid Ayo Balogun released his third studio album and boy, did the whole world go ‘ablaze’ with excitement? The expectations for this album was super high and fans were extremely intrigued about its release considering that Wizkid had starved his fans for an album for God knows how long. Anyway, we have put together a review for the album and we added a few things you noticed or didn’t notice, as well as our observations. Enjoy as we get into a track by track analysis of the album

1 Reckless

What a smashing way to open an album. Wizkid opens with his ‘level’ on this song. ‘Me never let them play on my Banjo’. ‘Everybody asking for me’. He even goes on to acknowledge God’s amazing grace on his life. I must confess, Wizkid’s songwriting has improved and the way he recounts part of his life experiences on this song is simply amazing ‘I don’t give a man more than he deserves cause they always bite the hand that feeds them’
‘Reckless’ leaves you yearning for more in the album and it exemplifies Wizkid’s dedication to God. ‘We sing amazing grace all night’ even if this depicts reveling as a form of praising God. Because I doubt he refers to a night vigil. The only thing I don’t get is why Wizkid titled the song ‘Reckless’ considering that the lyrics are not entirely synonymous with it.

2 Ginger ft. Burna Boy

This song is okay, but honestly, there is nothing special about it. . The collaboration on this song is what makes it special. No wonder it was the highest charting single on MIL .The song tune change between 2:37 and 3:17 by Burna did well to make it end beautifully. By now, it dawns on you that the mood of MIL is a certain smooth vibe. It is not fast and not slow and it allows people to listen and learn comfortably since it appears to be a lyrics embedded album.

3 Longtime ft. Skepta

We love the African-European sound blend on this song, considering that both artists represent a genre each. It is just too beautiful. The European sound dominates the track, but the sound of the drums brings us back. Wizkid sounds kinda mature as he goes ‘Omo to wun mi ni ma fe’ (I will marry the woman of my choice). If you noticed, so far the influence on MIL has been 55% English, 35% pidgin and 10% Yoruba.

4 Mighty Wine

Mighty wine is a romantic song, but it is not a custom one. ‘Mighty wine is a reference’ to a girl who ‘intoxicates’ wizkid. Therefore, she is a representation of a mighty wine.

5 Blessed ft. Damian Marley

The voice of a woman advertising pure water in the intro of this song gives us a Lagos vibe. A quick acoustic reference to where Wizkid grew up which prepares us for what we are about to hear on the song. The acoustics draw wonderful images of Lagos. In my opinion, Damian Marley wasn’t supposed to open the song. It took us off. It just didn’t fit what was expected of the song. Wizkid’s verse should have come first. His verse analyzes his experiences. Not only does his voice sound mature. You can feel his ‘mature mentality’ on the song. ‘Friends lost…praying they have no losses. ‘Blessed’ is a good song, but Wizkid should have featured another artist.

Men's Fashion Category
(Get men’s clothing at discount prices today!)

6 Smile ft. H.E.R

‘Smile’ is Wizkid’s way of saying he loves it when people express happiness in one way or the other. Even though it is not an addictive track, the song simplifies that happiness is what makes the world go around. For the smile, Wizkid says ‘I’d do anything for my love’. It is a good romance song and H.E.R did her part on the track.

7 Piece of me ft. Ella Mai

Ella Mai is the best artist to feature on this song! Wizkid’s intro wasn’t entirely thrilling but Ella Mai gets you more interested in the song and uplifts Wizzy’s own verse. It is a good romance song too.

8 No stress

‘No stress’ is okay, the beats and the lyrics are good. The lyrics are explicit though, and I guess this is why parental advisory was written on the album cover. Wizkid has really blended into the American music style and it is so evident in ‘No stress’. In fact, if you didn’t know he is Nigerian, you’d probably think he is American. Well, apart from the Pidgin.

9 ‘True love’ ft. Tay Iwar, Projexx

‘True love’ is one of the songs I am pained about on this album. What is Tay Iwar and Projexx doing on a common romance song as this? Both Tay Iwar and Projexx are really talented artists, but Wizkid should have featured only one of them. In fact, if you didn’t see or know that there are two features on the song, you wouldn’t notice when you listen to it. But well, collaborations sets listeners expectations for albums. Meanwhile, ‘True love’ should have been about Wizkid and Tay Iwar or Projexx finding ‘true love’ after forming ‘Hard guys’ or guys who just look out to have fun. It would have made the song more interesting. Wizkid’s intro on the song is fire though.

10 Sweet one

Sweet one follows immediately. But seriously, it shouldn’t have made this album considering that just like Mighty wine, True love, Essence, No stress and Roma, it is a romance song with lyrics not different from others. It kinda waters them down. Also, it shouldn’t have been so long since it isn’t special song. Apart from this, it is dulcet to listen to.

11 Essence ft. Tems

The sync between Wizkid and Tems is what makes the song special. Honestly. It is okay. It is not just as intriguing or passionate as one might have thought it to be.

12 Roma ft. Terri
‘Roma’ is a romantic song about a girl named ‘Roma’ and is a slight departure from other romantic songs on the album.

13 Gyrate

As the name suggests, ‘Gyrate’ has a party vibe more than a romantic vibe. It sounds really good and Wizkid should have centered it on hanging out with his friends rather than hanging out with his women. Thankfully. It has a romantic vibe but the party vibe supersedes it.

Deal of the day
(You don’t wanna miss this!)

14 Grace

‘Grace’ is a very wonderful way to sum up ‘Made in Lagos’ considering that Reckless opens with Wizkid’s life experiences and what life has taught him. He says ‘I stand real tall no matter what I face. I never worry about what the next man says’. Wizkid also makes declarative statements on this song which is apparently backed up by God’s grace

What should have been done to make ‘MADE IN LAGOS’ PERFECT

Wizkid should have explored other topics like giving advice to young ones, and talking about the current situation in Nigeria. Also, few of the love songs sounded quite identical and those songs should have had sub themes.

CONCLUSION

Wizkid is a music genius. Made in Lagos is a good body of work. You can listen to the songs and connect them together. It shows how Wizkid has totally evolved over the past few years as a musical artist. The songwriting is perfect, the beats are wonderful and the track sequencing is top notch. It is a thorough body of work. Kudos to Wizkid on this album

Top 10 2020 Nigerian Albums

2020 has been such a dramatic year but musicians all over the world held it down for us as we went though whatever drama came up anytime. Our Nigerian musicians have also stepped up and delivered powerful albums and extended plays. Below is our list of the top ten 2020 Nigerian albums- in no particular order.

10 Chike- Boo of the Booless
Release date- February 14, 2020
This album combines love themes in a very phenomenal way, and maybe that was why it was released to coincide with valentine’s day. it is just too beautiful to pass up. Pulse Nigeria describes it as a well traveled delivery by a sound craft of different influences, and gave it a rating of 9.8 out of 10, which is by far their highest rating of albums this year. Chike was a project fame west Africa participant and runner up in a season of The voice Nigeria. This is his debut album which later became the most listened to album in early 2020. ‘Beautiful people’ is our favorite track. What’s yours?

9 Adekunle Gold- Afropop vol.1
Release date- August 24, 2020
This album is such a masterpiece. A writer for Native Mag said ‘It is an unexpected display of musical dexterity’. It also marks the significance of Adekunle Gold’s growth in experimenting with Afropop and western sounds. It is such a nice blend, and if it had been promoted well, it would have been up for a Grammy nomination. The massive streams that supported this project is a proof of its success! It also proves that Adekunle Gold knows the entrails of music and he is very good in putting together a body of work. If you listened to Afropop volume one, you would know how compelling it is. ‘Pretty girl’ is our jam. What’s yours?

8 Patoranking- Three

Release date- August 27, 2020
According to him, ‘Three is all about love, happiness and life’. Pulse Nigeria gave it a 7 out of ten, stating that all the sounds on the album are cut from different sub-genres of Afropop. Patoranking is the king of dancehall in Nigeria and it is breath-taking how he incorporates it all with afrobeats. Of course, ‘Abule’ is our fave? Tell us yours in the comment section.

7 Fireboy DML- Fireboy DML
Release date- August 19, 2020
This is Fireboy’s second studio album, and it is electric!, but no, not in a way that wants to make you stand up and stand dancing or stuffs like that. The electricity it generates is calm, yet not subtle. Pulse Nigeria gave it a rating of 7.6 out of 10, stating that the album was created with international appeal and that it documents Fireboy’s artistic evolution. ‘Champion’ is our vibe on the album. What’s yours?

6 Tiwa savage- Celia
Release date- August 27, 2020.
Tiwa is a queen of music and the way she brags about this is to no none’s detriment. She is also very thorough on her albums and ‘Celia’, her third studio album and American debut album is proof of that. She is probably the oldest among Nigerian singers but ‘Celia’ proves that she hasn’t lost her touch one bit. Pulse Nigeria gave it a 6.4 out of 10, while Native Mag described it as ‘a formidable pop album’. The album produced our fave rebel song with the famous line ‘I no come this life to suffer…’ from the ‘Koroba’ single.

5 Olamide- Carpe diem
Release date- October 7, 2020
‘Carpe diem’ is French for ‘Seize the day’ and it is also a Latin phrase that urges a person to enjoy the present and worry less of the future. This is what Olamide did exceptionally on his album. The YBNL boss ‘seized’ music streaming platforms with his album, and we are not disappointed. Pulse Nigeria gave it am 8.5 out of 10, saying ‘it produces honest and vulnerable moments on cohesive pop album. 4 Yemi Alade- Empress
Release date- November 20,2020
Drumroll first! Yemi is literally the queen of Afrobeats, and as a successful artist with world tours under her belt. She proves she is a music genius with her work on ‘Empress’. The beats on the album are sick, and listening to it felt like Christmas celebration. Kudos to the producers who worked to deliver this almost perfect album. The unique thing about this album is how it features guest artists from all over the world. The Mzansi youth choir from South Africa, two francophone artists, two Nigerian artists and Grammy award winning Estelle. Boomplay music gave it an 8 out of 10. Lead singles on the album charted on Billboard Global Triller as number 9 and number 15 respectively. ‘Rain’ is an ageless song which is probably the fast track to earning her a Grammy nomination for the album, so it is our favorite. Wizzy baba! We know we said the arrangement is in no particular order, yet, this is arguably the most renowned Nigerian album both at home and in several countries.
