Adekunle Gold “Catch me if you can” album review

1) “Born again”ft Fatoumata Diawara

“Born again” is the representation of the indication of Adekunle Gold’s new sound, new music growth and certain decisions he made about his music career.

He indicates that he is under no pressure whatsoever becaue since he turned 30, he realised he has been living people’s wishes rather than his.

He indicates how he found freedom and purpose in marriage. It is funny that he says:

“Motherland na overseas”

This is a bold statement, even from Adekunke Gold, because he signals that if the grass is greener at the other side, then Overseas might soon become his new home.

Although it gets painful that we do not get enough of Fatoumata on this song. Adekunle Gold should have let her have a verse on “Born again”, because the way she spices up the chorus alone makes the song sound mystical.

If anything, it would have made the song better even though it’s an intro. It, however, is a good album opener.

2) Win

Win” has different lyrics, but it’s to similar to a lot of what artists sing now about people trying to bank on their sucess.

But Adekunle Gold is smart, he thanks his fans and mother for his success. This shows some amount of maturity, unlike how many artists say it like they woke up and suddenly become a star.

adekunle gold one woman lyrics ft Ty dolla sign

Adekunle delves it into the desire to be a winner all the time. He says: “See my throwback…” He doesn’t want to get back to the life he used to live because it was accompanied with so much suffering.

This explains his artistic evolution, with which he would go to any length to protect and ensure his growth.

3) Mase Mi

Adekunle Gold is such an amazing artiste! This is the third track on “Catch me if you can” and there is no romantic song yet. Big up!

He prays that he doesn’t fall prey to the devil’s tactics because the devil gives something for everything. This is why he says:

Mase me o, especially ma se mi, omo elomi ni ko se o”

He even prays for some amount of connection and relationship with God so it doesn’t give the devil space to possess him.

Read: Afro Nation 2022: See Artists lineup

If there is anything about Adekunle Gold, it’s about how he is able to make a song a hit, even though the song is something any other artist can sing and not get enough traction for. “Mase mi” is a jam!, and it will enjoy some popularity in Nigeria.

4) “One woman” ft TY Dolla Sign

Adekunle Gold confesses to being a romantic, being a man that wants only one woman and not conforming to what many “men” determine as been “manly“. Ty Dolla Sign makes his verse so magnificent. When he said with a sudden realisation:

Wait, she is really hottt”,

The song became a sizzling tune! Ty Dolla Sign killed his verse! But this song could have been very much better.

First, this is not Adekunle Gold’s best on a song with so much future like this- a song that has Ty Dolla Sign on it! .

He could have done so much better on his verse because it sounded like we’ve heard it somewhere before, so, our attention diverts before Ty Dolla Sign comes up

5) Mercy

Meanwhile, with “Mercy” the case is different. Adekunle Gold gets as real as possible, admitting his fame and growth in the music industry, and questioning the substance of people’s support for him.

He says:

“Make I no dey pop rose with my enemy”

Here, Adekunle Gold prays to God to guide him on his journey to stardom. No doubt, he is already a star, this stage is a new level for him, and on this level, he needs original friends, and not friends that come with clout.

“Mercy” gets more real when Adekunle gold actually admits that he is now a star. He knows he is big enough that people will want follow him everywhere and probably hurt him.

Oh lord have mercy mercy
This fake love con dey plenty plenty
And they try do man dirty dirty
jo jia ma je kia sesin sesin
ye ye o

“Mercy” is an amazing song because when Adekunle Gold prays to God for protection and guidance, it’s not obvious he is praying entirely, and he doesn’t bore the listeners with recycled over used lyrics.

Of course, the lyrics on “Mercy” is awesome, but this is not all that contributes to making the song.

Read: Why Chike’s “The Brother’s Keeper” album is worth waiting for!

It is devoid of all extras to make the song sound like a “feel-good” song.

It is a real song about a real life situation and not to get at anyone in particular.

“Mercy” proves that Adekunle Gold doesn’t make music to impress anyone. Or, for a lot of people who thought he changed his sound completely.

This is still Adekunle Gold that sang songs like “Fame” with all practicality.

The other “changed” part is just a evolving part of being an artist.

“Mercy” is a song embedded with so much originality that depicts Adekunle Gold’s complete sense of duty as a musician. It underlines how authentic Adekunle Gold has stayed to passing a message to his fans with his music.

6) More than enough

Finally! A romantic song! “One woman” is supposed to be the romantic song on this album, but it doesn’t stick enough as woman adulation. But with “More than enough“, it’s so afrobeat! So “Adekunle Gold“. It is a jam. It sounds like you are listening to an Adekunle Gold Onyeka Onweanu. He says:

“Owo ti de, je ka gbe daviDa local….you are my to-do list today!”

one woman lyrics adekunle gold ft ty dolla sign

Although this song might go on underrated because of its afropop authenticity and rawness, it is one of the best on “Catch me if you can“. Adekunle Gold understood the assignment and absolutely delivered.

7) Sinner ft Lucky Daye

“Sinner” trended a lot after its release, and as funny as it sounds coming from Adekunle Gold, it is a jam. People can do crazy things because of love, especially for women.

Which is why Adekunle Gold says:

“If I can’t get you, no one else can”.

Sinner” is about addiction to a girl. It gets realistic because some guys are this way about girls; they can’t just stop thinking about them and hope they see the lady every single day. “Sinner” is almost devoid of it’s faults.

Ayra Starr hints possible remix of “Bloody Samaritan” with Kelly Rowland

8) FYE ft Stefllon Don

We are trying to ge what “FYE” is, but the fact that there are no indications, except the fact that Adekunle Gold says “Fye ooo..” gives a misleading clue that doesn’t help enough.

Of course, Stefflon Don killed her verse, and if this song is going to be a hit, Stefflon Don is a major contributor, because Adekunle Gold panthers on this song and it’s so obvious.

He rambles the lyrics together, like he was trying to write something together but couldn’t write a whole song piece but added some different lyrics together.

9) Sleep

Sleep” is supposed to be a romantic song too, but it has so much RNB influence, that you wonder if it’s Adekunle Gold! The song is cool- for when you want to listen to a cool romantic song.

However, of all songs, this song should have had a collaboration because it feels like there’s another side to the story. We hear Adekunle Gold’s part on “Sleep“, but we want to hear something else apart from that. Since there is none, it reduces our curiosity on this song.

10) “High” ft Davido

Well, we all know this song was, and is a jam! But it has its own faults. The song engineering is on point! But it could have been more lyrically embedded, because if not because of the catchy chorus and hook:

“Me I just want to be high”.

The funny thing is that Davido’s verse is not as highlighted as it should be. It contributes very little to the development of the song.

Although he picks on later, it should have been as soon as he started his verse. This would have helped the song. But the way this song was arranged covers so many of its flaws! Well, a jam is a jam.

11) Dior Dior Dior Ft Foushee

It is wonderful that Foushee opened this song! Her voice is like butter and it makes you so interested in the song. It’s also amazing that the love is compared to being expensive like Dior.

Unfortunately, this is when Adekunle Gold goes all afrobeats when we need his full RNB side on a song as “Dior“.

He should have incorporated some RNB into this song to complement Foushee’s verse, and the drums and percussions are not helping either.

It sounds as though they are singing two completely different songs- by the time Adekunle Gold picks up Foushee’s verse.

This kills whatever curiosity or vibe we had for “Dior“. The genres are too contradictory, and it waters down the effect of “Dior” on listeners.

Adekunle Gold should have gone with the same tune that Foushee went with.

12) It is what is

“It is what it is” is about Adekunle Gold’s own authenticity, and not bowing down to what people down even when it hurts you. He says

“If it’s go cost my peace, then I go take my leave”

Adekunle Gold says so many true things on “It is what it is” like how happiness and having money can be two unrelated things.

He also hinted that people find fulfilment in what makes them satisfied and happy; hence the reason a lot of people are looking for what will make them happy. For him, it’s not money, because money can never be enough.

13) Selah

Classic Adekunle Gold move! You think “Selah” is Adekunle Gold’s way of closing “Catch me if you can” but no, he wants peace from a girl because she is so untrustworthy.

Selah” is the kind of song that should have come up earlier on “Catch me if you can” because it has a good vibe and arouses curiosity. It is also very relatable.

It gets funny when Adekunle Gold said

“She want take me to mama…Ewoo..but her mama crazy too”

The chorus on this song is embarrassing. It sounds too much like “High” and it almost turns listeners off immediately.

A better chorus should have been added so it doesn’t make this song sound like it was rushed, because it actually sound like it was. “Selah” is a nice song, but it was not handled and arranged as effectively as it should have been done.

It’s a jam that should have been made “jammier”

14) “Catch me if you can”

“Catch me if you can” begins like “Born again“, but it should have been made to sound so different since the album is hinged on it anyway.

It sounds a little basic and makes you think looking forward to the track is what you should not have done in the first place.

Catch me if you can” proffers some nice lyrics, but it’s too wordy, it should have been a balance of Adekunle Gold’s truth, some short catchy memorable lyrics, a preferably not slow beat, and more catchy hook. This is exactly what Ayra starr did on “Bloody Samaritan

Catch me if you can” is an amazing album. But it is not Adekunle Gold’s best. The song offers new sounds, Adekunle Gold’s truth, and his ideals as a man with new responsibilities. But it sounds like so many things have been beaten down on the album, and this waters down the album to an extent.

It feels like there should have been more, like there is still so much Adekunle Gold wanted to say.

Overall, “Catch me of you can” is a good album, but more attention should have been paid to a blend between the genres and lyrics. Only about three songs stand out, aside from the official singles (“High”, “Sinner” and “Mercy“)

What we expected from Adekunle Gold’s “Catch me if you can” album

1) The album will be a “feast of dynamic sounds”
Upon the release of Adekunle Gold’s “High” with Davido, a user commented on YouTube that Adekunle Gold has reinvented himself to boost his status, streams and income in the industry.

“It is what it is” sounded like what signposts a new decision. Like “Hey guys, I been singing “good boy songs” since all this while, but let’s switch it up”.

So yeah, it is what it is. In all sincerity, this new sound is really helping Adekunle Gold’s career and status in the industry because his song “High” is literally everywhere in Nigeria.

It has gained so much traction and popularity that it is competing with his greatest hits “Orente” and “Pick up”

Revealing a Nigerian Rising Star- The Rap Prof

These dynamic sounds will also usher in a new stage in Adekunle Gold’s career as he seems to have “broken” whatever was holding him down from exploring all parts of his music.

Though the songs actually sound more like “bad boy songs”, his fans are going crazy about it and accepting it very well because his music sounds good; sounds fire, and as long as he still makes good music, he has the support of his fans.

2) Sound Engineering
“Gold”– Adekunle Gold’s debut album, was a masterpiece. The sound engineering was on point and the reason for this was not far-fetched.

His wife- Simisola actually mixed and mastered the album. Simi is a sound engineer apart from being a singer and songwriter.

And if you know something and sound engineers and record producers who also happen to be singers and songwriters, they have no bad songs- no matter how hard they try to.

The sound engineering on “Catch me if you can” will be delicious, as the singles released ahead the album already proved that fact.

The sound engineering will help the authenticity of Adekunle Gold’s sound and reduce all imbalances to produce the right effects that will get people more synced with his songs.

3) Features
So far, he has released three singles ahead “Catch me if you can” and two of the singles have very interesting features. The first is with American Singer- Lucky Daye, and the second “High”- with Davido.

Both singles (“High” and “Sinner”) have cleared such a promising path for the album, and it’s only easy to assert that the album will do very well on streaming platforms and top numerous charts- both local and international.

There seems to be more promising features on the album that will make it a bomb upon release. Hopefully, he may have a song with Simi on the album.

But then, more interesting features on this album will increase its reception, streams and traction

Facts? Adekunle Gold has come far and has tangible results to show for his journey. It may be difficult to say what record label he is signed to currently.

He has about 20 singles and most of them-in fact, majority of them are hit songs and we hope he’s bringing the heat on his new album “Catch me if you can”.

How “Love Nwantiti” became popular

In 2021, the world went agog as Ckay’s 2019 smash hit; “Love Nwantiti” began to make waves on the social media tik tok app. People all over the world danced and vibed to the song.

“Love Nwantiti” which was originally released as part of Ckay’s 8-track E.P became one of the best performing songs on the E.P and earned itself a remix with afro pop star Joeboy and Ghanaian singer Kuami Eugene which was released in 2020 and became a big hit all over the world.

It took almost a year later when DJ Yo– a DJ from Mauritius remixed the original song and made it a sound on tik tok, it had positive receptions and it became a viral tik tok sound.

But questions arose on who actually owned the song and it wasn’t until Ckay made a 34 seconds video of the acoustic version on tik tok before the deserved credit was attributed to him.

It became the most shazamed song in September 2021 over Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber’s ‘Stay’ and Elton John’s remix of ‘Cold Heart’ ft. Dua Lipa. It has garnered over 15 billion views on tik tok. Ckay’s spotify monthly listeners also rose to as much as 32 million, he’s the first African artist to reach this milestone.

It also became the most certified Afrobeats song in the world. It’s safe to say Ckay made a masterpiece which has gone on to be one of the most, if not the most, successful afrobeats song ever.

“Love Nwantiti” blew up suddenly and became an instant media sensation on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube

The song has been remixed two times featuring Kuami Eugene and Joeboy, and another one with North African singer El Grande Toto. The reason for “Love Nwantiti” becoming famous is not far-fetched, the lyrics are relatable, the percussions are dreamily rhythmic, and the song is a pleasant listen.

Why  love nwantiti is here to stay for decades

It is no longer news, “Love nwantiti” has  to be one of the greatest sleeper hits in the world.

Its consequent boomerang was shocking to the world. But the truth is that,  you can never deny a  good song its attention. Boy, and has love nwantiti not gotten that attention?

The beautiful thing about “Love Nwantiti” is that it is soulful music. It is a one-in-a-kind romantic song that gives you a thereupitic feeling when you are listening to it.

It makes you feel less tense and transcends you into a world of hopeless romanticism and fantasy. Ckay submerges himself in “Love nwantiti” to deliver one of the greatest love songs in the world, but this is not the end of it.

The percussions can drive you crazy with euphoria, and the  “ahn…ahn…ahn…ahn…ahn…ahn”  will make you feel good that you are listening to a love song no matter how anti-love you are.

The percussions make the song a pleasant listen and even if you don’t listen to the lyrics as much as you want to, the percussions alone are enough to get you on with the song.

If you listened to the acoustic version of “Love Nwantiti”, you would know that “Love nwantiti” can thrive without percussions or instruments, although it flourishes with the accompaniment of a keyboard or guitar.

It is a song devoid of imperfections. You can never listen to it enough.

Love nwantiti lyrics

Love Nwantiti” is one of those songs that grow with time. It’s timeless, ageless music, and that’s the truth. The point of music is to create art, but you discover that there are some songs that get trite  even after they have been released for some seven months or one year.

With “Love Nwantiti”, it’s different. There is something different, something that calls out to listeners, and they are always ready to yield to it.

In fact, it is even more of a hit because of the way Ckay adulates a woman’s body in the song. It doesn’t sound like all other songs that artists sing and it sounds so cliche.

The lyrics do not sound different from those other songs, but  Ckay sounds very convincing with the lyrics that he makes the entire song sound entirely unique.

Afro Nation 2022: See Artists lineup

It would have been bad if Ckay vocalized on “Love Nwantiti”. He  sang  it with no purpose to over impress or show  that it  is a song that will do well without extras, and truly, it is.

The song made its debut on Billboard Triller Global in the third week of January 2022, charting Number 10.

Fiokee “Man” Album Review

When you hear the name “Fiokee“, you must have seen the credits he was given on albums like Flavour’s “Thankful“, Simi’s “Simisola“, songs like Yemi Alade’s “Ferrari“, Kizz Daniel’s “Woju“, and Patoranking’s “God over everything“.

Skiibii “Baddest boy” ft Davido: What does the song need? {Review}

This is because he’s one of the best Nigerian guitarists, and in fact one of the best guitarist in the world.

This is what he tries to prove on his “man” album

Therefore it is not surprising that after gaining experience in the Nigerian music Industry, fiokee is out with his debut album titled “Man

When you see the album cover, and of course the tracklist you see that man is Incorporated with a number of collaborations with popular names in the music industry.

We have features with Yemi Alade, Gyakie, Simi, Oxlade, Guchi, The Cavemen, Peruzzi, Ric Hassani, Sefa, Vector, Klem, Chike, Bella Shmurda, Lirical, Masterkraft, T.classic, Layydoe, D-black, Jean&Alex, Kelvyn boy, Nelson Freytas, Nosa and Ada-ehi.

You see these many collaborations and you know that it’s about to get lit. This is because this musical artist are very talented and have gone on to establish themselves in the music industry.

Fiokee “Man” album Review

1)“Good Time” ft T.classic and Jean& Alex

First, it is important to note that experience has afforded Fiokee an undeniable amount of expertise. This song opens with Fiokee singing like a pro, dishing out commendable lyrics while stringing amazing tunes with his guitar.

Although it would have been better if this song did not open the album as it doesn’t have the status of an album opener, but Jean and Alex come in immediately to spawn so much romantic lyrics in Spanish.

Of course, we can’t interpret it, we don’t care but allow ourself to get carried away in the sound.

That’s the thing about music, it doesn’t matter if we don’t understand the language, what matters is how the sound is able to relate to us.

Asides this, we get some nice feel about “Man” album. “Good time” might not be the perfect album opener, but it sets an acceptable tune for Fiokee’s “Man” album

2) “Smooth Operator” ft Nelson Freitas and Masterkraft

Smooth Operator” is a classic afrobeat song! And the guitar strings are so on point! The percussion is so hotttt. It follows the story of a girl who knows how to deceive men after making them fall head over heels in love with her.

Smooth Operator” is such a nice song. It has an R&B vibe but it doesn’t subtract an ounce of afrobeat from it. Kudos on the song engineering too.

The song is short enough to permit its reply value and protect the fact that it’s not entirely lyric- embedded. Smart.

So far, on Fiokee’s “Man” album, there is a great influence of dance Hall and this makes the album enjoyable to some extent.

3) Personal ft Bella Shmurda

Personal” was released as a single ahead of Fiokee’s “Man” album.
It didn’t help that Fiokee devoted most of this song to Bella Shmurda. We know Bella Shmurda is an established artist, but giving him almost all the verses on this song, and making it a single is a far shot from trying to make it a hit song.

The song is not bad, but it’s also not entirely unique. It talks about how people should not take things personally because other people act or do certain things. At best, such interpretations should be left to an assumption that it is love.

Personal” is an okay song, but it shouldn’t have come third on this album considering the pattern set by “Good time” and “Smooth operator“. It should have been pushed further down “Man” album, towards the end.

4) “I cannot” ft Yemi Alade

“I cannot” is not the best love song on this album, because the lyrics are not entirely unique and it is too unpolished, it has a lot of excesses which should have been removed to make the song a good enough listen.

Read: How “Love Nwantiti” became popular

Although it is a nice love song and the beats are so on point, it would have helped if Fiokee actually assisted Yemi Alade on the track seeing that the lyrics were not enough to sustain the song.

Let’s take a few seconds to appreciate Yemi Alade’s vocals and passionate delivery on the song though, it covers for most of the song’s flaws.

5) “Follow you” ft Chike and Gyakie

Of course, the song should have been opened by Chike, and it was! Such beautiful voice and lyrics. The amazing thing is how Chike is able to make common love song lyrics sound so unique.

When he sings it, it sounds like you’ve never heard it before. He has so much subtle convincing delivery on this song and it makes it a hit.

Give it up for Gyakie! She’s such a brilliant artist! She makes this song a perfect listen. Her lyrics are even stronger and more intoxicating than Chike’s and her delivery sounds like it’s embedded with some subdued but gradually rising passion.

So far, “Follow you” is the best song on Fiokee’s “Man” album.

6) “Number one” ft Guchi and Kelvyn Boy

Guchi might have just had her biggest hit moments ago, but this song shows that she has been working on herself continually.

Although “Number one” has a low amount of dancehall in comparison to other songs on this album, she did her best to hold it down on this album that we won’t notice if she’s the only artist featured on the song.

Don’t miss! Most Streamed Nigerian Artists on YouTube 2022

Never listened to Kelvyn Boy but he’s an amazing singer giving some Wizkid-lyrics vibe. “Number one” is a wonderful song and the strings make it a pleasant listen. If anything, the flaws are very little and are almost unnoticeable.

7)“Be a man” Ft Ric Hassani and Klem

We finally get a listen to one of the reasons behind this album. “Be a man” is a song that pushes men to take responsibility for the things they commit to, especially relationships.

Specifically, this song focuses on a young man and his fiancee who has a child for him.

Although the song tries to encourage men that their responsibilities should always be tended to. It points out that men are really doing a lot to make their family happy and financially stable. Therefore the chorus:

“I’m just trynna be a man”

Men are also under some amount of pressure to make their family proud of them and to attain the height their spouse has set for them. They say:

“I just want you to be proud of me”

8) “You bad” ft Perruzi and Layydoe

Now we get the dancehall influence back. Although this album drifts back and forth, it gives it a dynamic view even though it’s hard to put a finger on the album type.

This song is fire because of the way Layydoe plays with the lyrics in a crazy manner! She makes it so flexible. She sets an amazing tune for the theme of “You bad

Read: Nigerian artists with highest monthly listeners on spotify (January 2022)

Peruzzi doesn’t disappoint too, he makes the song land and catches the Lyric form as Layydoe drops it hot.

So much credit to Layydoe for making this song a hit, and to mention that it’s short enough to make it memorable. It has a catchy line of

“Baby you bad o…omo you bad o”.

9) “Kelewa” ft Umu Ogbiligbo

Kelewa” is an okay song. Especially in very traditional settings, it has so much vibe and drums that sends you several warnings but not entirely stern advice about being careful in life and the choices and adventures we make, as well as our decisions.

Kelewa” didn’t really start well and it made this writer think it should not have made the album, but it’s still okay considering that Fiokee’s “Man” has 40% reggae influence.

10) “Nne” ft The Cavemen

Welcome to the cave. “Nne” is a normal “The Cavemen” song, but it would have helped if it had some different lyrics that actually suited “Nne“.

Although Igbo was spoken in it very well, it didn’t sound fresh enough. It sounds like you’ve heard it as many times before. Nice work on the guitar though.

11) “Forever” ft Maua Sama and Lirical

Forever” has a 90% dancehall influence which makes it show that it should have been pushed up to follow the pattern of the dancehall influence established at the beginning of the song.

Lirical is a versatile artist, she switched between English and her language like it should be that easy. She makes the song so intoxicating and relaxing for us. She stirs up imaginations with her far-reaching lyrics.

Lirical and Maua Sama deliver on this song, kudos to them!.

12) “Koni Koni” Ft Simi and Oxlade

One of the most expected songs on this album. Well, we all know it’s because of the features on the song.

It was amazing that Simi started this song, but this is not Simi’s best on a song. Probably because it was what she was told to sing.

Still, the song would have been better with some relatable lyrics. Oxlade did a lot on his verse, to make the song nice enough. The song arrangement of “Koni Koni” leaves so much to be desired. It made the song sound mixed up, like it was not entirely finished.

13) “Dance” ft D-black, Sefa and Vector

Once this song begins, you know you ‘bout to dance. But it should not have been opened by the artist that opened it. The second artist that versed this song should have opened this song.

The song opening contained some unneeded explicit lyrics that made “Dance” sound offensive rather than mature.

14) “Goodness and mercy” ft Nosa and Ada Ehi

It’s amazing that two gospel artists are closing this album based on the theme of the song. Although the last track title is predictable, it’s not surprising as a lot of Nigerian artists close their album thanking God.

Read:Portable “Ogo Forever”. A good enough listen? {Review}

Ada Ehi delivers passionately on this album. She makes the song complete, and she should have been featured only on this song because she takes it head-on more and gives it a sense of finality.

Fiokee’s “Man” is experimental, but it’s relatable. It has relatable themes and has some interesting features. However, the flaws were obvious, but this has nothing to do with the fact that “Man” is Fiokee’s debut album. The song arranging and track listing could have been worked on to ensure an equitable balance of soul, dancehall and reggae.

Trying to intersperse the song one by one made it hard to lay a finger on the journey the album was taking us to. The track listing would have helped well in showing us the versatility of the album.

Also, It’s not entirely nice that we don’t get to hear Fiokee on most of the songs. In fact, we only hear him on a few songs and then it seemed like he took a spot backstage stringing the guitar. Fiokee did well on the songs he featured on, and involving himself on other songs would have exalted the replay value of “Man”

Songwriting:½
Replay value: ½
Mixing/producing: 1.3/2
Enjoyability/Satisfaction: 1.4/2
Delivery: 1.3/2

The Song Concept

First, the Concept of “My friend” is simply amazing. For Bella Shmurda to sit down, write and record a song as this, then he must have deemed it important enough.

Although it could be said that “My friend” was borne out of a personal experience, this does not take away Bella Shmurda’s evolution as an artist.

Read: Skiibii “Baddest boy” ft Davido: What does the song need? {Review}

In the music industry now, song releases are as predictable as their titles, it’s easy to listen to an album filled with only love songs that don’t sound different from one another.

There are only few songs in comparison that actually talks about something different, and Bella Shmurda’s “My friend”, is one of them.

Bella shmurda my friend lyrics

The realism of “My friend” makes it a pleasant listen. It is no doubt that Bella Shmurda is becoming a big artiste.

However, with fame comes certain difficulties; and such difficulties, are what makes Bella Shmurda’s Friend thinks he is getting proud and wants nothing to do with him.

This is why Shmurda says:

If I say goodbye my friend
I just wan to de on check, I just want to get that cheque,
And I no mean to offend
And if you look into my eyes and you go see I no dey lie,
Deep down for my mind I swear I get you for my mind

My friend Bella Shmurda lyrics

In his own defense, Bella Shmurda highlights his pursuit of the “Cheque” as his hustle for success by mentioning several countries he has to go to. It gets as real as possible.

Glibs

Bella Shmurda’s “My Friend” would have been a perfect song. Unfortunately, the glibs do no good to make it as convincible as it should sound.

It’s okay that Shmurda decided to chart a different course of song Concept through “My Friend”, and the song started with the right song lyrics, but the insertion of some love and sex lyrics are absolutely unneeded.

It gets to a point that listeners begin to juxtapose the correlation between his relationship with his friend and :

…Ligali, jubadi, askali eyan Buhari o
Shagari, Somori, Somebody sho mo mi ri o,
Ah…Ligali, jubadi, askali eyan Buhari o
Shagari, Somori, Somebody sho mo mi ri o,

If some more thorough songwriting had been done on “My friend”, perhaps some lyrics that actually fit into the song concept would have been created.

Read: Chike’s “Nwoke Oma”, a good indication of his album? {Review}

If the insertion of the glibs was to make the song not sound boring, then this was unnecessary, because Bella Shmurda said some real things on “My friend” that makes you think about the relationship you have with people and how your pursuit of success affects such relationships.

However, as soon as the glibs come up, it waters down this effect, and we struggle to get back on track.

The painful thing is that the glibs are recycled over and over as though it were the chorus, and this makes listeners wonder if it is the center of the song, as the chorus itself is not highlighted as much as possible.

Most Streamed Nigerian Artists on YouTube 2022

Apart from this,

“My Friend” is a highly relatable song because it offers the viewpoint of a famous person who has to do everything to ensure his continuance in success, and assure people that his person has not been lost in the process of chasing said success.

It begs for a mutual understanding that seeks to establish that there are so many constraints that come with fame itself, and such constraints affect relationships.

Chike Nwoke Oma review

While “Nwoke Oma” has been praised by many for its truth depiction, does it signal a good pace for Chike’s upcoming album?

Nwoke Oma has that “Beautiful People” vibe, but it is different in tune even though the lyrics are the same genre.

One of the things that make “Nwoke Oma” a Beautiful song is the unique lyrics.

Skiibii “Baddest boy” ft Davido: What does the song need? {Review}

Recently, when people sing about people following them around because of fame and money, it sounds trite no matter how real the artist tends to get.

chike nwoke oma lyrics

But with “Nwoke Oma”, the lyrics have been rebranded so much that we can’t help but listen.

This brings us to the point of relatability. Chike makes “Nwoke Oma” very relatable. You try to make it make sense to you and your environment even though you might not be a celebrity.

He says:

“When you succeed, dem go call you their own”

No one wants to associate with a loser, which then brings us to the point that Chike’s “Nwoke Oma” is not about people who love you just because you are great, but about accepting and recognising what true love is and what circumstantial love is.

It is impossible to not get attention or respect as a successful person, but Chike’s point in “Nwoke Oma” is that you should not get swayed by it, because it may even be fleeting.

People support you when it looks like you are doing good and say bad things about you when it seems you are down.

Read: Afro Nation 2022: See Artists lineup

Proven, Chike’s “Nwoke Oma” is not a disappointment, and as sermonic as it sounds, it doesn’t get in the way of proving that circumstantial love is common and predictable.

Nwoke Oma” signals a good pace for Chike’s forthcoming album.

But Chike will need to do more than “Nwoke Oma” on his forthcoming album. To sustain the standard of his debut album- “Boo of the Booless”, there needs to be huge amount of versatility and song direction.

This won’t be a problem at all considering that he’s a pro when it comes to music, and he never disappoints!

Adekunle Gold “Mercy” review

Adekunle Gold’s journey to stardom was shot on with the announcement of his album and the releases of his songs “Sinner” and “High” featuring Davido.

However, as much as these songs had their millions of fans, and charted atop several charts, it low-key signaled a stereotypical form of “feel good” music. This doesn’t make the songs bad.

Read: Most Streamed Nigerian Artists on YouTube 2022

They are hit songs with good vibes, but they don’t entirely contain “the whole Adekunle Gold package”.

Fireboy’s “Peru” remix unseats Adele on London Apple music, hits 21 million views on YouTube

“Mercy” is a song embedded with so much originality that depicts Adekunle Gold’s complete sense of duty as a musician. It underlines how authentic Adekunle Gold has stayed to passing a message to his fans with his music.

Here are the things we expect from Adekunle Gold’s forthcoming studio album “Catch me if you can”

First, the title “Catch me if you can” suggests growth- enormous growth that requires people to catch up with Adekunle Gold’s new sounds and the level he aims to reach now.

He is not even suggesting that you can catch him, he’s suggesting that you try, but even if you try, it doesn’t sound like you may be able to catch up with him because like he says “Catch me, if you can”

Ahead “Catch me if you can”, Adekunle Gold has released three singles
 “High” ft. Davido
 “Sinner” ft. Lucky Daye
 “It is what it is”

The first single “It is what it is” was released April 2021. “Sinner” was released in July 2021 and “High” was released in September 2021. Of all these singles, “High” has gained more traction and more streams, with more than 8 million views on YouTube within two months.

Afropop singer-songwriter Adekunle Gold announced the release of his next album titled “Catch me if you can” which will be made available on all streaming platforms on February 4, 2022.

The singer took to his Instagram page to make this announcement.

“Catch me if you can” is Adekunle Gold’s fourth studio album. He has successfully released three studio albums all to acclaim. Adekunle Gold is one of few Nigerian artists to have his first album –“Gold” debut on Billboard World Album Chart. The album debuted as No 7 on the chart upon release.

After this, he released two more albums “About 30” (2018) and “Afropop Vol 1″ (2020).

“Sacrifice” lyrics by The Weeknd

Sacrifice” lyrics The Weeknd

I was born in a city
Where the winter nights don’t ever sleep
So this life’s always with me
The ice inside my veins will never bleed
My, ooh
My, ooh

Uh, every time you try to fix me
I know you’ll never find that missing piece
When you cry and say you miss me
I’ll lie and tell you that I’ll never leave
But I sacrificed (sacrificed)
Your love for more of the night (of the night)
I try to put up a fight (up a fight)

Can’t tie me down (down)
I don’t wanna sacrifice
For your love, I try
I don’t wanna sacrifice
But I love my time
My, ooh
My, ooh

I hold you through the toughest parts
When you feel like it’s the end
‘Cause life is still worth living
Yeah, this life is still worth living
I can break you down and pick you up

And fuck like we are friends
But don’t be catching feelings
Don’t be out here catching feelings ’cause
I sacrificed (sacrificed)
Your love for more of the night (of the night)
I try to put up a fight (up a fight)
Can’t tie me down (down)

The Weeknd “Dawn Fm” album review

Dawn FM: The Weeknd remains undefeated with introspection

“Dawn FM” has to be one of the most creative projects of the decade. It offers so much to unpack and confesses people of their feelings through explorations of their thoughts, juxtapositions of the options life has made available to them, and a reveal of how freedom in life is not based on how we’ve modified life to a certain norm. With “Dawn FM”, The Weeknd sets you free of insinuations. Listen, and listen deeply.”

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye also known by his stage name “The Weeknd” announced the release of his album “Dawn Fm” as far back as the release of the first single from the album titled “Take my Breath” in August 2021. For several months, The Weeknd teased his fans about the projects.

The release of a trailer which revealed the tracklist even spurred more interest, as the trailer depicted that The Weeknd might be going deeper in his genre of music- Escapism, Dark Lyricism and Melancholia

The releases of The Weeknd’s albums- “Kiss Land” (2013), “Beauty Behind the Madness (2015), “Starboy” (2016) and “After Hours” (2020), saw him win Six American Music Awards, 19 Billboard Awards, 3 Grammy Awards, 15 Juno Awards and 2 MTV video musc awards. True, The Weeknd has come far and there is so much to say about “Dawn Fm” his latest album.

First, “Dawn Fm” is an “all-The Weeknd” body of work as there are few collaborations, and second, The Weeknd sends an all-signs message with this album.

“Dawn Fm” album review.

1) “Dawn Fm”

■Lyrics

Verse: The Weeknd]
This part I do alone
I’ll take my lead, I’ll take my lead on this road
And I need something (Something) to hold (To hold)
Make me believe in make-beliefs
‘Cause after the light, is it dark, is it dark all alone?
All alone

[Interlude: Jim Carrey]
You are now listening to 103.5 Dawn FM
You’ve been in the dark for way too long
It’s time to walk into the light
And accept your fate with open arms

Scared? Don’t worry
We’ll be there to hold your hand and guide you through this painless transition
But what’s the rush?Just relax and enjoy another hour of commercial free yourself music on 103.5 Dawn FM

Stay tuned

“Dawn Fm” is an intro into the album, and it establishes the whole mood for the album. It’s funny how The Weeknd has established such comfort in his genre of music and brought people into the “safety” of this music through dark lyricism.

Although it stands that “Dawn Fm” Sounds like something you are told to tune in to after an horror film, but then, there are dynamics to the song opening that renders your interest agog, and this interest is set to be deeply satisfied as you get more into the album. “Dawn Fm” is short enough to spur your excitement about “Dawn Fm” (The Album)

2) “Gasoline”

■Lyrics

It’s 5 AM my time again
I’ve soaking up the moon, can’t sleep
It’s 5 AM my time again
I’m calling and you know it’s me
I’m pushing myself further
I’m just trying to feel my heartbeat beat
I wrap my hands around your neck
You love it when I always squeeze

It’s 5 AM, I’m high again
And you can see that I’m in pain
I’ve fallen into emptiness
I want you ’cause we’re both insane
I’m staring into the abyss
I’m looking at myself again
I’m dozing off to R.E.M.
I’m trying not to lose my faith

And I love it when you watch me sleep
You spin me ’round so I can breathe
It’s only safe for you and me
I know you won’t let me OD
And if I finally die in peace
Just wrap my body in these sheets
And pour out the gasoline
It don’t mean much to me

It’s 5 AM, I’m nihilist
I know there’s nothing after this
Obsessing over aftermaths
Apocalypse and hopelessness
The only thing I understand is zero sum of tenderness
Oh baby, please just hold me close
Make me believe there’s more to live

Around, around, around, around we go
In this game called life we are not free

And I love it when you watch me sleep
You spin me ’round so I can breathe
It’s only safe for you and me (Don’t let me go)
I know you won’t let me OD (Don’t you let me go)
And if I finally die in peace (Oh, yeah)
Just wrap my body in these sheets
And pour out the gasoline
It don’t mean much to me

“Gasoline” is a tricky song, and it seems as though as the album advances, the songs get deeper. “Gasoline” is about how the artist is in love with someone and says he finds solace in her company and “obsessing over apocalypse and aftermaths”.

There seems to be so much directions to this song than just escapism, because it not only feels like fear and anxiety, it feels like a call to some purpose, some Essence to life. The artist questions the essence of life and goes absurdist, but the question about “Gasoline” remains:

“Does life remain subject to our imaginations even when we don’t permit it?”.

This question is almost answered when the artist confirms that if he dies as a result of his obsessions, then he truly subjected himself to his fears and hopelessness. At this point, the question is no longer about our imaginations, but that a contrast has been created to how love and romance is not enough to save one from hopelessness. However, this stands to be corrected.

3) “How do I make you love me?”

■Lyrics

We’re going back in time
I’d like to see you try
Unpacking thoughts through tunnels in your mind
I’ll fix you mushroom tea
And cross the restless sea
Release yourself to escape reality

It doesn’t phase you
I need a breakthrough
I only want what’s right in front of me
It’s quite unusual
Seeking approval
Begging for it desperately
I said

How do I make you love me?
How do I make you fall for me?
How do I make you want me
And make it last eternally?
How do I make you love me? (Ooh ahh)
How do I make you fall for me?
How do I make you want me (Ooh ahh)
And make it last eternally?

I can see the real you, girl
You don’t have to hide
Forget ’bout what your daddy said
I’ll teach you how to shine
And all the things you tolerated made you cold inside
But I can light you up again like embers of a fire

It doesn’t phase you
I need a breakthrough
I only want what’s right in front of me
It’s quite unusual
Seeking approval
Begging for it desperately
I said

How do I make you love me?
How do I make you fall for me?
How do I make you want me
And make it last eternally?
How do I make you love me? (Ooh ahh)
How do I make you fall for me?
How do I make you want me (Ooh ahh)
And make it last eternally?

The musicality of “How Do I make you love me” is top notch. In “How do I make you love me”, the singer explores differences in the lives of two people that make them seem incompatible.

Although it seems like their worlds are apart, the singer pesters his love interest by telling her that “it’s quite unusual seeking approval”. The problem then becomes “How do I make you love me? How do I make you fall for me?”.

The Weeknd establishes that if he is able to bring his love interest into the light, then she’d definitely fall in love with him. He says:

“This is not the real you, you don’t have to hide yourself”.

It seems like she’s pulling back and the singer proves that he can help her discover herself, seeing that she wants to please everyone and fit into the norm expected of her. He says she’s “begging desperately for attention”.

Lyrically and musically, “How do I make you love me” is the best so far on the album. Although the first two songs suit the mood of the “Dawn FM”, but “How do I make you love me” is more experimental, more fresh.

We don’t see it coming and we appreciate the surprise, with other songs, there’s an amount of predictability, but with “How do I make you love me”, there’s so much uniqueness. And the percussions towards the end of the song? Legendary!

4) “Take my breath”
Written by: Max Martin, Oscar Thomas Holter, Ahmed Balshe, Abel Tesfaye.

■Lyrics

I saw the fire in your eyes
I saw the fire when I look into your eyes
You tell me things you wanna try (uh)
I know temptation is the devil in disguise
You risk it all to feel alive, oh, yeah
You’re offering yourself to me like sacrifice
You said you do this all the time
Tell me you love me if I bring you to the light

It’s like a dream what she feels with me
She loves to be on the edge
Her fantasy is okay with me
Then suddenly, baby says

Take my breath away
And make it last forever, babe
Do it now or never, babe (ah)
Take my breath away
Nobody does it better, babe
Bring me close to-

Want me to hold on to you tight
You pull me close, I feel the heat between your thighs (uh, say)
You’re way too young to end your life (huh)
Girl, I don’t wanna be the one who pays the price

Ooh, it’s like a dream what she feels with me
She loves to be on the edge
Her fantasy is okay with me
Then suddenly, baby says

Take my breath away
And make it last forever, babe
Do it now or never, babe (ah)
Take my breath away
Nobody does it better, babe
Bring me close to heaven, babe (uh)
Take my breath

Oh, oh-ooh
And they’ll see me
Oh-ooh, ooh (yeah, say)
Oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh-ooh-oh

Take my breath away (take my breath away)
And make it last forever, babe
Do it now or never, babe (ah)
Take my breath away (take my breath away)
Nobody does it better, babe
Bring me close to heaven, babe

Take my breath (take my breath a-, breath away)
(Nobody)
Take my breath (take my breath a-, breath away)
Nobody does it better, babe
Bring me close to heaven, babe (uh)
Take my breath

“Take my breath” has that dark lyricism we know of The Weeknd, but one might begin to wonder how it’s the lead single considering that it’s not an entirely unique song. “Take my Breath” is a good enough song with nice lyrics.

The percussions and songwriting are on point, but it’s hard to say if the song can really lead an album and tell the feel of what to expect from an album such as “Dawn FM”.

Although this has not reduced the kind of expectations fans of The Weeknd have for “Dawn Fm”, it stands that “Take my Breath ” might have been chosen out of many singles or was the song available when the single was released. Either ways, it is not the best song on the album.

We might want to pay attention to the Weeknd’s enthusiastic delivery though. It may seem like he even offers some sort of advice to his love interest to not “Take your own life” because he has to deal with the grief of losing her, thereby creating problems for him.

It doubles as a pun as The Weeknd literally tells her to take “his breath” instead, rather than killing herself. But even at the brink of this insinuation, “Take my Breath” has a 5% indication of what “Dawn Fm” is about.

5) “Sacrifice”

■Lyrics

I was born in a city
Where the winter nights don’t ever sleep
So this life’s always with me
The ice inside my veins will never bleed

Every time you try to fix me
I know you’ll never find that missing piece
When you cry and say you miss me
I lie and tell you that I’ll never leave

But I sacrifice
Your love for more of the night
I try to put up a fight
Can’t tie me down

I don’t want to sacrifice
For your love
I try
I don’t want to sacrifice
But I love my time

I hold you through the toughest parts when you feel like it’s the end
‘Cause life is still worth living
‘Cause life is still worth living
I can break you down and pick you up
And fuck like we are friends
But don’t be catching feelings
Don’t be out here catching feelings

‘Cause I sacrifice
Your love for more of the night
I try to put up a fight
Can’t tie me down

I don’t want to sacrifice
For your love
I try
I don’t want to sacrifice
But I love my time

I don’t want to sacrifice
For your love
I try
I don’t want to sacrifice
But I love my time

Oh, baby
I hope you know that I, I tried
Oh, baby
I hope you know I love my time

I don’t want to sacrifice
I don’t want to
I try
I don’t want to sacrifice
But I love my time

“Sacrifice”
has so much “stay true to yourself” tune. It’s about how the singer can’t be held down by even love. He can’t “Sacrifice” his true self no matter how much he has been tried to be fixed.

He’d rather stay out in the “night”- which is a representation of his interests. “Sacrifce” has a didactic mood. It tells you to not sacrifice what you love doing because it seems you should, especially for something you don’t have absolute interest in or are not ready to commit to.

It’s funny how The Weeknd can sound so dark and still whip out some self-development lessons that leave you thinking how you’ve been conforming to what you don’t like.

6) “A tale by Quincy”

■Lyrics

Looking back now I didn’t know what it was supposed to be
And, and it’s like raising kids, man
If you weren’t raised, you don’t know how to raise, you know?
I just did the best that I could with them because they know fucking well I love them
But I didn’t do the best I could
I didn’t know what the fuck I was doing
I didn’t

I will never forget watching my mother get put in a straight jacket
And taken out of my home when I was only seven years old
She was diagnosed with Dementia praecox and put in a mental institution
Leaving my daddy alone with me and my little brother Lloyd

I later had an evil stepmother who further cemented the idea that I didn’t need a mother
Growing up without one had long lasting impressions I didn’t fully understand until much later in life
It bled into my relationships with family and those I had become romantically involved with

Whenever I got too close to a woman I would cut her off
Part of that was vindictive and partially based on fear, but it was also totally subconscious
Looking back is a bitch, isn’t it?

Quincy tells a story about how disconnected he felt because he didn’t grow up with a mother’s guidance and this left him vindictive and affected the kind of relationships he had with people.

“A tale by Quincy” remains undefeated in exploring the kind of struggles people go through in life that makes them fall short of certain qualities that would have improved them, or those around them.

Read:Most Streamed Nigerian Artists on YouTube 2022

Although it seems more like Quincy’s tale is from the perspective of a Black Man growing up with so many contributory race problems, the issues remain as valid and universal as possible.

7) “Out of Time”

■Lyrics

The last few months I’ve been working on me, baby
There’s so much trauma in my life
I’ve been so cold to the ones who loved me, baby
I look back now and I realize

And I remember when I held you
You begged me with your drowning eyes to stay
And I regret I didn’t tell you
Now I can’t keep you from loving him
You made up your mind

Say I love you, girl, but I’m out of time
Say I’m there for you but I’m out of time
Say that I’ll care for you but I’m out of time
Said I’m too late to make you mine, out of time

If he mess up just a little
Baby, you know my line
If you don’t trust him a little
Then come right back, girl, come right back
Gimme one chance, just a little
Baby, I’ll treat you right
And I’ll love you like I should’ve loved you all the time

And I remember when I held you (Held you, baby)
You begged me with your drowning eyes to stay (Never again, baby)
And I regret I didn’t tell you
Now I can’t keep you from loving him
You made up your mind

Say I love you, girl, but I’m out of time
Say I’m there for you but I’m out of time
Say that I’ll care for you but I’m out of time
Said I’m too late to make you mine, out of time

Ooh singing (Out of time)
Said I had you to myself
But I’m (Out of time)
Say that I’ll care for you but I’m out of time
But I’m too late to make you mine, out of time

(Out of time)
(Out of time)

Don’t you dare touch that dial
Because like the song says, you are out of time
You’re almost there, but don’t panic

There’s still more music to come
Before you’re completely engulfed in the blissful embrace of that little light you see in the distance
Soon you’ll be healed, forgiven and refreshed
Free from all trauma, pain, guilt, and shame
You may even forget your own name
But before you dwell in that house forever
Here’s thirty minutes of easy listening to some slow tracks
On 103.5 Dawn FM

“Out of Time” establishes that the singer cannot trust himself enough to falling love with someone because he’s so divided with himself and can’t requite anyone’s love.

“Say I love you but I’m out of time”.

It presents a situation of having his other divided part take over the relationship, but it doesn’t always work out that way because his other divided part takes over and makes him “Out of Time”.

He has so much to give but there is no more chance, and even if he had other chances, these chances stand the chance of getting ruined too because he will still be “Out of Time”

Towards the end of the song, we get a sneek peek into what the whole album seeks to achieve, to free you from guilt, depression, sickness and fear. It stands that “Dawn Fm” wants you to listen and cleanse you of all that seem irregularities to you

8) “Here we go…again” ft Tyler the creator

■Lyrics

Strike a pose with my kinfolk
Front page of the billboards
Suit and tie and cigar smokes
Macallan shots till it burn throats
We still celebratin’ Superbowl

Catalogue lookin’ legendary
Ring froze like it’s February
XO, that’s a mercenary
A quarter bill on an off year
Used to sing on lofts
But now we cruising on a yacht, we clear, yeah

Yeah, said you wanted your boyfriend jealous with a couple pics
And you didn’t expect to fall for me once you got this dick

The city dark, city dangerous
Your girlfriend’s tryna pair you with somebody more famous
But instead you ended up with someone so basic
Faceless
Someone to take your pictures and frame it

And my new girl, she a movie star
My new girl, she a movie star
I loved her right, make her scream like Neve Campbell
But I make her laugh, swear it cures my depressing thoughts

‘Cause baby girl, she a movie star
Baby girl, she a movie star
I told myself that I’d never fall
But here we go again

Ooh
Here we go again
Life’s a dream
‘Cause it’s never what it seems
But you’d rather love and lost with tears
Than never love at all
So here we go again

Although this love is strong to me
Some things can change, go wrong with me
We don’t know how it’s gonna be
Forever is too long to me

We don’t need the government involved because we like to touch
We don’t need no damn religion tellin’ us that we in love
But if we did crush down the road
Spendin’ lawyer fees up
Pen and pack gon’ save my ass if these feelings freeze up
You gon’ sign this prenup
You gon’ sign this prenup
You gon’ sign this prenup
You gon’ sign this prenup

Ooh
Here we go again
Life’s a dream
‘Cause it’s never what it seems
But you’d rather love and lost with tears
Than never love at all
So here we go again

The number one station to free your soul
Dawn 103.5

It’s funny how The Weeknd descends from talking about his superstar life and achievements into how people get unpleasant “modified” love while trying to get someone famous but actually getting someone “faceless” or “Basic”.

“Here we go again” tells a story of how the singer falls in love again despite ruling out the probabilities. Although it seems like she is more in love with him than he is with her. Tyler says “you gon sign this prenup” to make her assure she won’t break his heart or do something that will mess everything up.

In “Dawn Fm”, The Weeknd attempts to juxtapose the effect of love- whether it can really free you, and whether it’s something you should try out based on your feelings. Meanwhile, he questions whether feelings are actually enough to satisfy love.

9) “Is there someone else”

■Lyrics

I know that you’re hiding something from me
That’s been close to your heart
And I felt it creeping up everyday
Baby, right from the start
I know that look you give when we’re fighting
We’re fighting
‘Cause I used to be the one who was lying, oh lying

Oh, is there someone else or not?
‘Cause I wanna keep you close
I don’t wanna lose my spot
‘Cause I need to know
If you’re hurting him, or you’re hurting me
If I ain’t with you, I don’t wanna be
Is there someone else or not?
Ooh, or not

I don’t deserve someone loyal to me
Don’t you think I see
And I don’t want to be a prisoner to who I used to be
I swear I changed my ways for the better, the better
‘Cause I wanna be with you forever, forever

Oh, is there someone else or not?
‘Cause I wanna keep you close
I don’t wanna lose my spot
‘Cause I need to know
If you’re hurting him, or you’re hurting me
If I ain’t with you, I don’t wanna be
Is there someone else or not?
Ooh, or not

“I don’t want to be a prisoner to who I used to be”… As the album progresses, there seems to be a development in the “life” of the singer in terms of ideas and ideologies. At the beginning of “Dawn FM”, the singer does not care entirely about love because it seems like it’s not the way to his freedom, he’d rather obsess over “hopelessness and apocalypse”.

But now, he wants to “change for better”, he asks if there is “someone else” in his lover’s life. He seems so intentional about love because it makes him sound so invested, so changed that he asks continually: “is there someone else or not”.

“Is there someone else” shows inclination towards love as the way out, as the key to freedom, a key to exploring his feelings.

10) “Starry Eyes”

■Lyrics

I only met you in my dreams before
When I was young and alone in the world
You were there when I needed someone
To call my girl
And now you’re my reality
And I wanna feel you close
But you’re defeated, baby
Broken, hurtin’, sufferin’ from a shattered soul
Oh-whoa, a shattered soul, oh

Let me be there, let me be there for your heart
Let me be there, I can be there until you’re whole
You weren’t touched by a man in so long
‘Cause the last time it was way too strong
Let me be there, let me be there for your heart

Let me love you, let me love you like you need
And I’ll make it, make it my responsibility
I’ll be there every step of the way
I’ll get you back on your feet
Let me love you, let me love you like you need

And you can kick me, kick me to the curb
It’s okay, babe, I promise that I felt worse
Back then I was starry eyed
And now I’m so cynical
Baby, break me, kick me to the curb, oh

The development is absolutely undeniable, in “Starry Eyes”, we are shocked to hear the singer volunteering to be hurt, offering to “be there”, to love the girl because she is so hurt. Apparently, the greatest guess is that she may be a victim of rape. He says:

“Kick me to the curb”, “Let me love you”.

Read: The best platforms to promote your music for free and still get paid

This shows outright development, because so far, the singer has been so intentional about not hurting himself, staying alone and not trusting enough in love. But with “Starry Eyes”, it’s different.

He brings out a side of him that is willing to trust, willing to love, willing to get hurt by others. This side, is the singer’s way of saying he’s definitely staying true to himself and not holding back any part of him that wants to express love.

11) “Every angel is terrifying”

■Lyrics

Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the angels’ order?
Even if they pressed me against their heart, I’d be consumed
For beauty is the terror we endure, while we stand and wonder, we’re annihilated
Every angel is terrifying

Intense, graphic, sexy, euphoric
Provocative, edgy, thought-provoking
Technically and visually stunning
A compelling work of science fiction
A suspenseful exposé
Cinema like you’ve never seen it before

The creativity on “Dawn Fm” is entirely mind-blowing. Like any other Fm station, there’s an advertisement.

Although we think “Every Angel is terrifying” is like a poetic rendition of a lady, it speaks to no one in particular. It’s supposed to be us, a representation of us. “Every angel is terrifying” expresses beauty as art, and art as beauty.

12) “Don’t Break My Heart”

■Lyrics

(I’m paralyzed)
(Let’s go)

I see you drowning in the purple lights
Diamonds shining bright
I see every ice on you
You snatch my soul, I’m crucified
I feel paralyzed
I’m so mesmerized by you (By you)

But I know you’re right for me, ecstasy
I keep coming back for more
I think that you would die for me, destiny
And this time I know for sure

Just don’t break my heart (Don’t break my heart)
Don’t let me down, please
Don’t you break my heart (Don’t break my heart)
I don’t know if I can take it anymore

Take it anymore, take it anymore
I can’t take another heart break or I’ll end it all
And the girl I used to love
We broke up in the club
And I almost died in the discotheque

And now, I know she wasn’t right for me, enemy
I kept coming back for more
I’d rather you would die for me, destiny
And this time I know for sure

Just don’t break my heart (Don’t break my heart)
Don’t let me down, please
Don’t you break my heart (Don’t break my heart)

I don’t know if I can take it anymore
Don’t break my heart (Don’t you, don’t you)
I’m falling apart already
Don’t you break my heart (Don’t you, don’t you)
I don’t know if I can take it anymore

I believe the liquor’s talking
I just need the room to stop
And I could be the one you want
Just as long as you don’t break my heart

(And I realize when I kissed your neck)
(That the room is hot)
(I can taste your sweat)
(It’s just you and I in the discotheque)
But don’t you worry

Just don’t break my heart (Don’t break my heart)
Don’t let me down, please
Don’t you break my heart (Don’t break my heart)

I don’t know if I can take it anymore
Don’t break my heart (Don’t you, don’t you)
I’m falling apart already
Don’t you break my heart (Don’t you, don’t you)
I don’t know if I can take it anymore

“Don’t break my heart” expresses a transition we’ve seen coming. The singer already recognizes his feelings and can’t hold them back. He now begs her not to “break his heart”. “Don’t break my heart” begins as basic as any other love song, but it quickly crescendos into a setting that takes over our imagination.

We are brought into the discotheque and we try to see them holding each other, but there is so much that The Weeknd is not going on this song. We feel the transition, but the impact is not as huge as we would have loved it to be.

13) “I heard you are married” ft. Lil Wayne

■Lyrics

The way you hypnotized me, I could tell
You’ve been in control
You manifested this, but girl, I blame myself
Things I should’ve known
The whispers that I hear
Are blowing through my ears
These words I need to hear from you
And I know this is a fling
But you’re hiding someone’s ring
It hurts to think I’m sharing you

Ooh, I heard you’re married, girl
I knew that this was too good to be true
Ooh, I heard you’re married girl, oh, oh, oh

If you don’t love him (Oh no)
Then do yourself a favor and just leave him
Your number in my phone, I’m gon’ delete it
Girl, I’m way too grown for that deceiving
‘Cause I don’t play

Can’t be your side bitch
That shit ain’t fly bitch
Can’t be your pilot
Can’t be your private
Make me your obvious

If I ain’t your husband, I can’t be your hybrid
I heard you’re married
I bet he treats you like Virgin Mary
You like it dirty and I’m Dirty Harry

I thought we were some love birds, canaries
Bird to Larry
But I can’t fuck with you
You put my love on the line and then hang up on you

That’s a long kiss goodbye, I gotta tongue kiss you
And when Doves cry we ain’t got enough tissue
I’m still in love with you
Where the love at?
You walk down the aisle, I can make you run back
Like fuck that, where the love at?
Tell hubby I’ll kill him, no hub cap

Whoa, oh, I heard you’re married, girl (Married, girl)
I knew that this was too good to be true
Oh, I heard you’re married, girl, oh, oh, oh
And I hate it (I hate it)
Oh, I heard you’re married, girl (Married, girl)
The way you had me wrapped around your fingertip
Oh, I heard you’re married, girl, oh, oh, oh

I can’t be with you
No, I can’t be with you
You’re too deceiving, girl, oh
I can’t be with you
No, I can’t be with you
You’re too deceiving, girl, ooh
I can’t be with you

No, I can’t be with you
You’re too deceiving, girl, oh
I can’t be with you
No, I can’t be with you
You’re too deceiving, girl, oh

All this while, the singer seems to have been singing about the same person, and now the bombshell is that he heard she’s married. He says “I knew this was too good to be true”. Now, we know what orchestrated this transition.

We know his development has been altered, not stopped, and that the cause of this alteration is so deep that it creates a lifelong effect. He says
“I can’t be with you…you are too deceiving..girl”.

Read: The best sites to download subtitles for movies and tv series

Now we know ,love is not the answer to his freedom, the lady breaks his heart even after pleading to her not to. It doesn’t matter how much space he has given to love, that space is now taken up by hate and disappointments and we can’t help but hope he fights it, but this hope is a grain of sand, it’s as intangible as the feelings he tried to hold on to.

14) “Less than Zero”

■Lyrics

Remember I was your hero, yeah
I’d wear your heart like a symbol
I couldn’t save you from my darkest truth of all

I know
I’ll always be less than zero
Oh yeah
You tried your best with me, I know
I couldn’t face you with my darkest truth of all
Oh

‘Cause I can’t get it out of my head
No, I can’t shake this feeling that crawls in my bed
I try to hide it but I know you know me
I try to fight it but I’d rather be free
Oh

Oh yeah
Can we meet in the middle?
Oh yeah
‘Cause you were just like me before
Now you’d rather leave me
Than to watch me die in your arms

But I can’t get it out of my head
No, I can’t shake this feeling that crawls in my bed
I try to hide it but I know you know me
I try to fight it but I’d rather be free
Oh

I can’t get it out of my head
No, I can’t shake this feeling that crawls in my bed
I try to hide it but I know you know me
I try to fight it but I’d rather be free

Yeah
I’ll always be less than zero
You tried your best with me, I know

“Less than Zero” comes with an amount of resignation, that the singer has so many flaws that his lover cannot keep up with. This is another way he says he is signing out of the whole love affair and love thoughts which “I can’t get out of my head”.

He said, “I tried to fight it but I’d rather be free”. He knows now that his freedom is not hinged on love, and that the reverse is the case. At this point in his life, his freedom comes from happiness, and in his quest to be happy, love doesn’t come handy.

15) “Phantom Regret by Jim”

■Lyrics

You’re tuned to Dawn FM
The middle of nowhere on your dial
So sit back and unpack
You may be here awhile
Now that all future plans have been postponed
And it’s time to look back on the things you thought you owned

Do you remember them well?
Were you high or just stoned?
And how many grudges did you take to your grave?
When you weren’t liked or followed, how did you behave?
Was it often a dissonant chord you were strumming?
Were you ever in tune with the song life was humming?

If pain’s living on when your body’s long gone
And your phantom regret hasn’t let it go yet
You may not have died in the way that you must

All specters are haunted by their own lack of trust
When you’re all out of time, there’s nothing but space
No hunting, no gathering
No nations, no race
And Heaven is closer than those tears on your face
When the purple rain falls
We’re all bathed in its grace

Heaven’s for those who let go of regret
And you have to wait here when you’re not all there yet
But you could be there by the end of this song
Where The Weeknd’s so good and he plays all week long
Bang a gong, get it on

And if your broken heart’s heavy when you step on the scale
You’ll be lighter than air when they pull back the veil
Consider the flowers, they don’t try to look right
They just open their petals and turn to the light

Are you listening real close?
Heaven’s not that, it’s this
It’s the depth of this moment
We don’t reach for bliss
God knows life is chaos
But He made one thing true
You gotta unwind your mind
Train your soul to align
And dance till you find that divine boogaloo

In other words
You gotta be Heaven to see Heaven
May peace be with you

“Phantom Regret” makes “Dawn FM” end with a bang. A meditative bang. It seems like The Weeknd pierced our soul to know our thoughts, our feelings, the things we didn’t get right, the things we wished people knew about us, and the attention we wished we got. The Weeknd says ” Heaven is for those without regrets” which is actually true contextually.

Phantom Regret” is introspective enough to tell listeners that “Flowers don’t try to look right“. They stay true to themselves enough no matter their shape, their colour or structure, and that’s how we should be, staying true to ourselves. Staying true to ourselves is what gives us freedom.

“Dawn FM” has to be one of the most creative project of the decade. Listen, and listen deeply”

[Verse 1: Ric Hassani]
That I don’t call you like before doesn’t mean that I don’t love you

And that’s why I’ve been working my ass out
But it’s taking my time

Fiokee “Man” Album Review

When you hear the name “Fiokee“, you must have seen the credits he was given on albums like Flavour’s “Thankful“, Simi’s “Simisola“, songs like Yemi Alade’s “Ferrari“, Kizz Daniel’s “Woju“, and Patoranking’s “God over everything“.

This is because he’s one of the best Nigerian guitarists, and in fact one of the best guitarist in the world.

This is what he tries to prove on his “man” album

Fiokee be a man lyrics

Tracklist

Lyrics

My beautiful baby
Come closer, gimme your ears
I wan tell you something (something, something)
Wan tell you something (something, something)

You mean a lot to me
And because I have you girl
I know that I’m winning
I know that I’m winning

You are driving me crazy
And I’m loving you daily, oh my love
Never letting you go anywhere
That you go I’ll follow you

Baby, know that I’m not crazy
You know that I’m not lazy, lazy
Baby, know that I’m not crazy
You know that I’m not lazy
Running after you, uh uh

I will follow you
Anywhere you want to go
I will let the whole world know
That I’m in love with you
I will follow you
Anywhere you want to go
I will let the whole world know
That I’m in love with you (That I’m in love with you)

Work that thing o na na
Treat me like your one true lover
There’s nothing wey go make me leave you
Nobody wey love me reach you
The way you pamper me, I like (pamper me, I like)
You keep my dreams alive (uh uh uh)
Never never never never never
Will I ever let you slide

Oh baby, my baby
There is something that you need to know
I’m in love with you you you, yeah
Oh baby, my baby
There is something that you need to know
I’m in love with you, yeah

Baby, know that I’m not crazy
You know that I’m not lazy, lazy
Baby, know that I’m not crazy
You know that I’m not lazy (no, no, no)

I will follow you
Anywhere you want to go
I will let the whole world know
That I’m in love with you
I will follow you
Anywhere you want to go
I will let the whole world know
That I’m in love with you
That I’m in love with you

(Oh my God, it’s FIOKEE)

Lyrics

Uhh uhhh uhhh
That I don’t call you like before, doesn’t mean that I don’t love you
That I don’t show up like before, doesn’t mean that I don’t care
I just want a good life for you and my unborn child
That’s why I have been working my a** out
But is taking my time
I don’t even have time for myself

And I’m going buck wild
I don’t care as long as you are the one I dey do am for
Just need you girl to understand that I
I’m just tryna be a man
I’m just tryna be a man (a man)
I’m just tryna be a man (a man ooh ah)

That man that you want (man that you want)
Shawty no dey bother
No dey cutu liver
This brother gat you
Everly your lover
Say I no live you never

Me no fiti jonze
Make you just give me some time
I go make it up to you when things don set
You wan see me all the time
E no possible understand that hustle, is taking my time
I don’t even have time for myself

I’m going buck wild
But I don’t care as long as you are the one I dey do am for
Just need you girl to understand that I
I’m just tryna be a man (a man, uh uh yeah)
I’m just tryna be a man
I’m just tryna be a man (a man ooh ah)

That man that you want (man that you want)
My baby
Me and you know that you are my sweetie
Tell me anything that you want baby
I just wanna make you proud of me
Baby girl you know you are my shawty
Take my money and my body
I chop anything wey you give to me
Me and you be making history ooooh

Read:Portable “Ogo Forever”. A good enough listen? {Review}
