How good is Manchester City’s iIkay Gundogan?

How good is Manchester City’s iIkay Gundogan?

ilkay Gundogan is having one of his best seasons as a professional footballer. The German International has battled with injury since his move from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester City in the summer of 2016.

His move to Manchester City coincided with Manchester City’s acquisition of Pep Guardiola as manager. However, hardly had he featured for the club before he sustained a knee ligament injury on 14th December 2016. That injury kept him out of the team for the remainder of the season and denied him the chance to adapt to Guardiola’s style. The seasons after were not too dissimilar as injuries threatened to derail his city career until now.

Therefore, his stop-start seasons ensured that other players took centre stage at City. The likes of Kelvin De Bruyne, Fernandinho, David Silva, Sterling, and Sergio Aguero. Not since his time under Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund has the spotlight been on the German International.

Today, Pep Guardiola – who according to Soofootball, is one of the average Footballers who became World Class Coaches . It also sees Gundogan as an important part of his City team.

Gundogan was named in City’s starting X1 in 14 consecutive Premier League matches (the most in his Manchester City career till date) between mid-December 2020 and the end of February 2021. This period coincided with the start of City’s record-breaking run of 28 matches unbeaten.

Indeed, a brace against Premier League rivals Liverpool ensured that City established their top spot on the league table. He followed up that performance with another brace against Tottenham in the next Premier League fixture.

In a team with so many attacking talents like City, Ikay Gundogan sits top of the team’s Premier League goalscorers chart with 12 goals

Also, his 15 goals in all competitions as of 17th March 2021 is more than any of his teammate’s at City or any German in Europe’s top 5 leagues.

In fact, His 15 goals in all competitions so far is more than his total goals in the past 2 seasons (11 goals) at Manchester.

Putting this in perspective, his arguabl best season at Dortmund where he scored his team’s only goal in their 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Uefa Champions League final, Gundogan only managed 4 goals.

Also, He is the first midfielder in Europe to score 10 league goals from open play this season.

There are not many footballers who can play anywhere in the midfield position like Gundogan. As Guardiola himself was a midfielder puts it “He (Gundogan) is one of the most intelligent, wisest players I have ever trained, I have ever seen.”

Such intelligence has seen him arrive at the opposition 18-yard box to score a goal from his midfield position on several occasions.

Gundogan has been so impressive this season that he has emerged as the favorite for the Premier League player of the season award and is being mentioned amongst contenders for the Ballon d’Or award too.

If Manchester City is to win the Quadruple (The English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, and Carabo Cup) this season, they must do all they can to keep Gundogan fit and in this blistering form.

Zagreb boss steps down after being SENTENCED to prison

Zoran Mamic

Dinamo Zagreb manager Zoran Mamic has resigned after being sentenced to four years and eight months in prison.

Dinamo’s preparations for their Europa League clash with Tottenham on Thursday are now in disarray following the news.

Zoran Mamic stepped down immediately as Dinamo coach following the confirmation of his sentence. He said: ‘Although I don’t feel guilty, I resign as I said before I would do if the sentence was confirmed. I wish all the good luck to the club,’

Afterwards, Dinamo revealed their new head coach will be former Dinamo player Damir Krznar.

Mamic’s brother Zdravko, Dinamo’s former executive director who is at large in neighbouring Bosnia, also had his sentence confirmed by the court as did former tax official Milan Pernar and former Dinamo director Damir Vrbanovic.

‘The Supreme Court has confirmed the Osijek Municipal Court’s verdict sentencing Zdravko Mamic to six and a half years of imprisonment for the embezzlement of 116 million kuna ($18.26 million) from Dinamo football club,’ said the statement published by HRT.

‘Zoran Mamic’s sentence has been reduced to four years and eight months from four years and 11 months, while Milan Pernar had his sentence reduced to three years and two months from four years and two months.’

The court also confirmed the three-year prison sentence for former Dinamo director Damir Vrbanovic.

They were charged with tax evasion worth 12.2 million kuna ($1.9 million) and for siphoning off 116 million kuna from transfers of players from Dinamo.

The Croatian champions are at home to Tottenham on Thursday in the return leg of their Europa League round of 16 return leg after the English side won the first leg 2-0 last week.

Top list of Fifa world cup finals ever played

Top list of Fifa world cup finals ever played

The FIFA world cup was established in 1930, FIFA was contested by the men’s national teams of the members of the FIFA-the sport’s global governing body and it usually occurs every four years except in 1942 and 1946; when it was cancelled due to World War II.

After taking a look at all of the World Cup finals, we bring you our pick of the top 5 of all time. Our Top 5 World Cup Finals is made up of the most entertaining, dramatic and controversial finals there has ever been.

5. Italy 1-1 France (2006)

Not considered the most spectacular of World Cup finals in terms of the game itself, but the controversy surrounding Zidane and Materazzi will forever remain in the memory.

Zidane converted a penalty early in the game to put France 1-0 up, but Italy got back onto level terms soon after through Materazzi. These two players would not only score the goals in this final; they would also be involved in the moment that would effectively decide the destination of the trophy.

After being provoked by the Italian defender, who apparently said some very unflattering things about Zidane’s sister, the French talisman preceded to headbutt Materazzi in the chest, sending the towering centre-back to the floor. Zidane was duly sent-off for the offence and Italy would go on to win the game via a penalty shoot-out.

Pictures of Zidane walking past the trophy after being sent-off provide a powerful image showing the sad end to what had been a fantastic career for the French playmaker. Zidane would retire from club and international football directly after the World Cup final.

4. Germany 0-2 Brazil (2002)

Redemption! Brazil lost the previous World Cup final to France 3-0, a game which had been surrounded in controversy following reports of Brazil’s star striker being ill before the game. Brazil were clearly affected by Ronaldo’s condition and put in a subpar performance.

2002 offered Ronaldo and co a chance to put things right, which they duly did. Ronaldo scored both of Brazil’s goals in the second half to wrap up a deserved win and reinstate Brazil as the world’s best national team. Brazil side had the three Rs up-front, Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho, and two legendary wing-backs- Cafu and Roberto Carlos, which made Brazil an unstoppable force in 2002.

3. Brazil 0-3 France (1998)

France ’98 produced a memorable final, but not entirely for the right reasons. France had never won the World Cup before and the pressure was certainly on the host nation as they went up against Brazil and their star striker Ronaldo.

Prior to the kick-off, reports started to surface that Ronaldo wouldn’t play in the game due to illness. It had been reported that Ronaldo suffered a fit shortly before kick-off and his name wasn’t put on the initial team sheets. However, the star striker did start the game but looked a shadow of his former self, as did the rest of his teammates, who were clearly affected by what had happened.

Take nothing away from France though, they and especially Zidane, dominated the game with the talisman scoring twice to put France into a commanding lead. A late goal from Petit made it 3-0 and France secured their first World Cup title.

Still to this day, mystery surrounds what actually happened to Ronaldo before the final and the true answer may never be revealed.

2. Brazil 4-1 Italy (1970)

When you think of the World Cup, you inevitably think of Brazil and, depending on your age, either Pele, Ronaldo or Neymar. The 1970 World Cup final in Mexico gave us what was perhaps the most complete and stylish performance by any finalist before or since.

Brazil claimed a 4-1 victory over the Italians and the game itself is often summed up by Brazil’s final goal. A sweet passing move much like that of a Pep Guardiola, Barcelona side was finished in style as Pele laid the ball off to the marauding full-back Carlos Alberto, who fired the ball into the back of the net. A goal that is still considered one of, if not the best, in World Cup final history.

With that result, Pele became the only player in history to win three World Cups and remains one of the greatest footballers to ever play the beautiful game.

1. England 4-2 West Germany (1966)

This is a no-brainer, England vs West Germany at Wembley has to be the best World Cup final of all time, it had everything.

West Germany took the lead in the 1966 final, much to the dismay of the home fans. England had never reached a World Cup final before and here they were with the home advantage losing to the Germans. However, Hurst equalized for England and a goal from Peters put the hosts 2-1 up, only for West Germany to send the game into extra time with a last-minute equalizer.

Hurst scored his second of the game in the 101st-minute to put England on the edge of glory with what is still the most debated goal of all time. Hurst’s shot hit the bar, bounced down and then came out of the goal, leaving the England players celebrating and the Germany players remonstrating. The referee didn’t know if it was a goal and had to consult his linesman, who seemed confident the ball had gone in and England were 3-2 up.

England ended any doubts over who deserved to win the game as Hurst strolled forward and smashed in a fourth for England, which lead to one of the most famous commentator lines in football history, “And here comes Hurst. He’s got some people on the pitch, they think it’s all over. It is now!”

Ibrahimovic reveals his desire to stay in Milan if Maldini wants him to

Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 39, was asked about his future beyond 2020-21.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic said he is open to extending his Milan contract if technical director Paolo Maldini “wants”.

Ibrahimovic has been a revelation since returning to Milan for a second spell in January last year, the evergreen 39-year-old spearheading the club’s Scudetto charge this term.

The former Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain star – out of contract at season’s end – has scored 14 Serie A goals to help Milan up to second position, three points adrift of city rivals Inter.

Asked about his future, Ibrahimovic told RAI’s Che Tempo Che Fa via RAI: “I don’t know, let’s see. If Paolo wants, I am up for it. His season is still long, there are many games left. We always play to win, even if they can play once a week.”

Because he has been nursing an injury, Ibrahimovic has been sidelined as he participated in the Sanremo music festival during the week.

Meanwhile, he was in attendance for Milan’s 2-0 victory at Hellas Verona on Sunday.

“I am Zlatan, I feel the responsibility and I feel like a leader. This team is the only one that made me feel thrilled. I want to teach, I want to be a guide,”

“When I say something, others are like: ‘Ok, we are doing it’. Today I wanted to be in Verona, I felt it inside. When I spend a day without them is like staying without my sons.” He added

Cristiano Ronaldo sets another record in Juventus 3-0 win over Spezia

Portugal and Juventus superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo was at it again during his side’s 3-0 win over Spezia in the Serie A on Tuesday, scoring a goal on the night which ensured that the 36-year-old became the only player to score at least 20 goals in each of the last 12 seasons in the top-five European Leagues.

The striker’s current stretch began way back in 2009/10 during his first season with Real Madrid with the Portugal skipper scoring at least 25 times during each of his nine seasons in Madrid, hitting the 40-goal mark three times during his trophy-filled time in Spain.

His performances have ensured that Juventus have won the league title in his first two seasons and he will want to add another honor to his tally by the end of this season too.

However, despite his performances, the club have struggled in Europe with Bianconeri yet to win the UEFA Champions League since 1996.
